Our good friend Alice & Lois made the faulty mistake of buying white outdoor cushions for the summer season. Rather than throwing her cushions away or buying an entirely new set, she gave them new life with the use of our dye for synthetics, Rit DyeMore. This project was inspired by the Sweet Paul tutorial right here and some AMAZING and expensive overdyed rugs from the latest Anthropologie calendar. We dyed an inexpensive wool blend rug bought specifically from Amazon for this purpose. Important Note: Never use an heirloom or irreplaceable item for your dyeing. Also, do not attempt this technique for wall to wall carpeting. We recommend this technique for an inexpensive rug or an old rug that you are about to give up on since you don't love the look or color.

Overdyed rugs are really hot right now but can often cost a pretty penny. Because of this, our friend Sweet Paul decided to overdye one himself! The dye process was super simple. The lighter the rug, the better the result!

I love, love redo's. I mean if you haven't already picked up on that from my blog. And will continue to do more I promise! When I found this chair it was a hot mess. I mean an off white/cream, color stained, mess. I saw the beauty in it, and... fell in love with its $2 price tag! Oh yeah baby, you read that right. If you haven't already visited your county's Goodwill Discount Center, then by God, hop up right Now and GO! Just wait till its open, or not, I am sure they have campers. You can be like the old Mervyn's commercial... "Open, Open", with your nose pressed against the window. They sell everything by the pound usually $1, but their furniture is anywhere fro $2 to $10. I see a lot of furniture redo projects in my future! Oh, and Tuesday's are the best day. They get a lot of stuff donated over the weekend and they process it all on Monday, and put it out Monday night for Tuesday :) Ok, enough of all that clearance stuff. I could do a whole post on that, bargains are a high for me! Onto the good stuff! I read a lot of posts before doing this. I really, really wanted to do the fabric spray paint (Simply Spray Fabric Upholstery Spray), but that stuff is like $12 a can. I mean it could be worse... but I read you have to usually do about 3 coats, and 1 coat is 1 can. Now its still so much cheaper to go that route than having it professionally recovered, but I am a frugal gal. I got this for $2 and I want to be able to say to myself "Hey this only costs $20 or less to redo" I couldn't say that with the spray. So I did some more research, and some more, and some more. Then I found this tutorial on dying furniture with Rit at Vivaciously Vintage, and I was like ok, lets try it! So I got Scarlet Red liquid Rit. Mix one cap full to 1 1/2 cup water. I at first used a paint brush as I read to do in another blog, but after about 45 minutes of doing that, I was like screw this, and got out the spray bottle to test it out. And it worked so much better. I mean very quick! This is the after one coat, but unfortunately after it dried it looked a mauve color. So I did it all over again, once it was completely dried. And at first it wouldn't stain darker, so I used less water and more dye. And it finally worked. I then spray painted the legs a flat black. Don't you just love my tape job? Hey it worked! Here it is all vibrant and RED, and I LOVE IT! And all for Only $6! $2 Chair $2.85 for the Rit $1 for the spray paint add a couple more cents in there for tax :) It will be great for my photography! Thanks for tuning in! By the way, if you would like to see my photography Face Book page, here it is... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Andylizzy-Photography/146300828872310

How to Dye a Comforter Set Using a Front Load Washing Machine and Rit Liquid Dye. It's eaiser than you think!
Updating wingback chairs for under fifty dollars using RIT Dye and a simple Garden Sprayer.
So, if you remember I professed my profound love for this chair here. Sadly, this chair does not work in my house. But I am unwilling to let it go to someone else. So, I am going to make it work, whatever the cost. (as long as it isn't above $10) I have seen some interesting pins on Pinterest about dyeing the fabric of chairs. I thought this would be my best bet for making it over. My upholstering skills are not up to the level to be able to tackle this chair quite yet. I went to JoAnn's and picked up some liquid RIT dye. I wanted a bluish type color. Not anything too dark. So I combined a denim blue and an evening blue. I bought a spray bottle especially for the project. I heated up some water in my electric water heater. I put in four cap-fulls of denim blue and three of evening blue and then added the hot water. Tip#1: Do not add the water right after boiling. Wait a little. I learned the hard way and have a very deformed spray bottle now. I brought the chair just outside of my garage and put flattened cardboard boxes underneath it. I worked on this when we had semi-nice days (before the latest snowfall). This is in the middle of the second coat. I did three coats. I decided that it wasn't the right color after all. It was a good start. But I wanted a little green added to the mix. I went back to JoAnn's and bought the RIT liquid dye in the color Teal. That was the perfect addition. I put the final coat on Saturday night. It was freezing outside and I was ready to be done. I left it in the garage another day and then brought it into my entry where it was warmer. I left it there for a day. I just brought it into my house. After seeing it in decent light, I'm thinking i may need to do another coat of Teal. It looks a little splotchy. But the fabric has a pattern to it and it could partly be that. If I rub my hand across it, it is clean. But I am leery of setting any white or light colored clothing on it yet. I tried to keep the wood clean by wiping it down after spraying a coat on the chair. I can see some places where the blue dye has settled in the wood. Once the weather warms up again, I'd like to sand down the arms and legs and put some kind of finish on it. I'm not sure what yet. I like the idea of a white wax. What do you think? Does it need another coat of dye? What should I do to the wood arms and legs?
