This is a project I do at Easter time with the students. These are done by Grade 1. I also did this with Grade 4 this year using smaller beads and more complicated patterns. Click on picture to see larger. You need to do up a recipe of salt dough clay. ( 1 recipe is enough for 24 crosses using a 3 1/2 inch cutter) 4 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 cups to 2 and 1/2 cups warm water (varies depending on flour and humidity, enough for a soft dough) Knead into a soft dough Store in a ziploc bag. If not using right away you can store in the refrigerator for like forever. Just pull it out ahead of time to come to room tempertaure before using. I like to color the dough. Using liquid tempera or acrylic paint squirt some on the dough. Fold over the dough. and then knead like crazy....don't worry if it looks marbled like this it just means you have to keep kneading. It will eventually look like this. Even color throughout. Roll it out and then using a cookie cutter cut out the shape. Place a paper clip 1/2 way in at the top for hanging. I get the kids to put a bit of water on the surface of the cross using their finger and then they can start forming their design with beads. We use pony beads in different sizes as well as wood beads and large decorative beads. I asked them to try and make a pattern using color or shape. They need to push the beads in fairly firmly. I then place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I write the name of the student on the paper in sharpie and then place their creation either on top or next to their name. This allows me to keep them straight until they are baked when I can then write their names on the back in sharpie. Bake in a 250 - 300 degree oven for about 2 - 3 hours until hard. You don't want to overbake and have them get a brownish tinge. When cool add a coat or 2 of Mod podge. This will help "glue" into place any loose beads as well as add a nice shiny finish. Keep in mind that salt dough responds to the humidity in the air. It can sometimes feel soft even after baking and sealing. Just let it be and it will dry out again. That's it. I add a ribbon thru the paper clip at the top and the kids have a great creation to take home for Easter. See you next time.

1-2-3 Come Make Some Vacation Bible School Crafts With Me Having taught 3-year-olds in Sunday school, I discovered there is not a whole lot out there for this age group. Crafts, that came with pre-packaged programs, were way beyond their skill level, attention span and time available. Vacation Bible School programs were not really much different. They had wonderful activities for older kiddo's, but again materials and crafts for this age group were lacking. The director of our Children's ministry, asked me if I could design 5 quickie crafts with Bible verses for the 3,4, and 5 year-old age group for this year's VBS. They group them together, as it's never that big of a group, despite having anywhere from 100-200 kids. I love designing crafts and helping out, so this was a no brainer "Sure!" Since I've had several requests for Christian teaching materials, I thought I'd post these, as they turned out really cute. Their theme this year was Stand Strong in the Kingdom, so I made castles, crowns, and knight shields, however these crafts are general enough that they could work for just about anything. So people wouldn't have to go out and buy a bunch of stuff, I designed the crafts trying to use materials I knew were readily available. To make all of the projects pictured, you'll need: construction paper, card stock (for the shields), aluminum foil, scissors, glue sticks, crayons, rhinestones, glitter, curling ribbon, foam, a stapler, hole punch, brass brads, pipe cleaners, tooth picks, Elmer's glue, sticky notes, scrap paper (to use as work mats, newspaper works wonderful) and gold glitter. I find it best with this age group to skip giving directions. Simply hold up your sample and say, "I'm so excited! We're going to make a castle today!" Whatever craftivity you are doing with little ones, do NOT pass out all of the materials at once. This is not only overwhelming for them, they also won't sit still long enough for you to say, do this first, only using these materials. ie for the castle: 1. Pass out castle. Have them cut out. Have them pre-cut for 3's.2. Pass out pre-cut triangles. Have them glue the triangles to the castle.3. Have them cut the door. Remind them not to cut this completely out, but STOP so there's a hinge. Show sample at each step.4. Pass out the door verse and have them glue it behind the castle door. 5. Pass out turrets. Have them roll the turrets. Staple to the castle.6. Pass out brown crayons to color the door and write their name on their castle. 7. Read the verse together and explain why they did the project, so they can share that info with their parents. I thought it would be cute to add a toothpick flag. These can be pre-made; ask the child where they want their flag. Scotch tape it to the back. Do not let 3's hold the toothpicks. I made the flag with a sticky note. No glueing necessary and it wraps right around the toothpick! Children who finish early can work with a helper learning their verse. Preparation for these projects is simple. Run off the templates on construction paper, and pre-cut the smaller pieces to expedite things. I traced a child's "praying" hand once on a folded sheet of paper and then cut once to make 2. For the "lamp unto my feet" you need to fold the yellow lanterns in half horizontally for easier cutting. I traced a child's foot with their shoe on. This is a craft idea for "Queen Esther" Sunday School lesson. A Jewelry Box made out of craft foam. We made these with our younger elementary group (which happens to be mostly girls). They filled the boxes they decorated with plastic gemstones, bead necklaces, and plastic rings. They loved it! I thought this verse was perfect for this lesson: "Braiding your hair doesn’t make you beautiful. Wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes doesn’t make you beautiful. Instead, your beauty comes from inside you. It is the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Beauty like that doesn’t fade away. God places great value on it." 1 Peter 3:3-4

For the past weeks we've enjoyed using the "I love my Bible! Curriculum". This is a free resource that has been a tremendous blessing in our Sunday School class. Last week's lesson focused on "God's Word is a cleanser". I wanted to give the kids something that would help them remember the lesson so I decided to make these fun DIY mini heart shaped soaps for them to take home and use! They were super easy and cheap to make! Materials: Ivory Soap (From what I understand this is the only brand of soaps that works for this). Food coloring Water Microwave Parchment paper or microwave safe dinner plate Bowl and spoon Small heart shaped cookie cutter This is what I did: Place 1 bar or Ivory soap over the parchment paper or plate in the Microwave on high for 1 minute. Take a peek, it's fun to see how the bar of soap transforms into this amazing fluffy cloud! Take the "cloud" out of the microwave (careful, because it will be hot). Let it cool down a minute or two, then place inside a big bowl. You could let your kids crumble the cloud into a fine dust, but I personally did not enjoy inhaling the fine soapy powder, so I did this part myself and outdoors with my mouth covered :) Once you've made it into powder, you can start adding a few drops of water. A little at a time until you can form a uniform dough. Be careful, too much water can make a gooey mess that will be heart to roll. At this point you can also add a drop or two of your favorite food coloring. Roll the soap "dough" and cut out the hearts. Allow them to dry overnight over a plate and you are done! I've also included a free printable label that you can download here. The labels measure 4.25x2" approximately (when cut and folded). You can use these labels with the clear cello bags you find at crafts stores and even the dollar store.

We started Day 3 of Creation by talking about what God had made on Day 1 and Day 2. I brought out the sensory bottles as we talked about each day, and then I introduced our Day 3 sensory bottle. To make this bottle, I followed the directions from “My Little 3 and Me” blog post. […]
The younger girls helped me mix up another batch of salt dough, this weekend (4 cups of flour, 1 1/2 cups of salt, 2 cups of water, and 1 tablespoon of oil).. . ...to form into a roundish stone, and a cave around an empty can, with a slit, in the dough, at the back, to fit a popsicle stick cross... ...for our second year of a tradition we picked up from Little Page Turners, last Easter - a resurrection scene. We baked our dough tomb, and stone for a few hours at 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and then let it cool for a while before adding the cross, and Little People from our Nativity set (which I remembered to leave out, when I packed up the Christmas decorations, this year). The girls still want to paint it all, but I went ahead and set it out for our Bible reading of Matthew 27:45-28:19, this morning. After I read the passage (which you can read by clicking the link), we talked again about how the characters from the Nativity scene fit into the resurrection scene, both from the bit we read in Matthew, and what can be found in the other parts of the Bible. Jesus - though not a baby any longer, is clearly part of the story. And, just like the baby was wrapped and laid in the manger, Jesus' body was wrapped and laid in the tomb. An Angel - announced Jesus' birth, and an angel rolled back the stone, and announced, "He is not here, He's risen, just as He said." Mary - was present all through both stories. Frankincense and Mirr - were brought by the wise men after Jesus was born, and spices were brought by the women, after Jesus was buried, to anoint the body. We also talked about how Jesus appeared to the disciples a few days later, and asked Peter if he loved Him, three times, and each time after he responded with a yes, Jesus told him to feed His sheep. And, Judas, instead of bringing gold as a gift, took a bribe of silver to betray Jesus. Don't forget to check out the Bible Alive! One thing about going through the whole book of 2 Samuel with school aged children, there are a lot of violent stories. The week when Saul killed himself was especially challenging. But, weapons-based craft projects are pretty appealing. Here I cut out a sword pattern on posterboard and let them cover the blade with aluminum foil. I think adding the plastic jewels on the handles helped it be more appealing to the girls, but even the boys enjoyed decorating them. The memory verse from Proverbs: "Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" helped tone down the violent tendencies. For the story of David bringing the ark back to Jerusalem (and Uzzah's unfortunate demise we made Ark of the Covenants, adapted from this version on Danielle's place. I changed it by pre-hotgluing small gold jump rings to one popsicle stick, then having the kids thread a gold-pained coffee stirrer-sized stick through that for the carrying pole. Thankfully, they sell gold tempera paint at Michael's, so you don't have to deal with spray paint, or use yellow and brush with gold glitter.

At the moment, I'm having a bit of a spree of finding ideas and then adapting them for use with the children! I found this one here. This is a great thing to do with your most able crafters amongst the children. Our 11 year olds had no problem, but the rest of us worked together to make a joint effort! Each globe has 20 faces and I challenged the children to think of 20 different words (either as a group or individually) to describe God, each of which we would write on the faces. The globes look beautiful when finished, especially if you have time to decorate them, and it was an interesting challenge to think of enough attributes of God to fill each face without repetition! We're now going to hang these in the room we use on a Sunday to remind children of the amazing character of God! Once you know how, the globes are quite easy to make... To make the globes you will need 20 circles, each with an equilateral triangle inside it. I've made a template sheet, which has 10 circles/ triangles on it, so if you want to use it, print out 2 sheets! Print the sheet here. Cut 20 circles out. Fold along the straight lines (I prefer to fold so that the lines end up on the outside). This will give you 20 triangles with tabs that stick up. Glue the triangles together by the flaps so that you have two sets of 5 and a long strip of 10 as shown in the picture below. Turn one set of 5 upside down... ...and use the tabs to glue the long strip to it. Now add the second set of 5 to the top, again using the tabs. If you want to do what we did, write words to describe God on each face and decorate!
