As you can see, engineers, surveyors and crews graded a torturous route of many tiems the "crow" distance from Georgetown to Silver Plume. That was an achievement with the possible exception that Silver Plume was the start of the Argentine Route to Waldorf and as a scenic route to the ridge of Mount McCleland. Crofutt’s Grip-Sack Guide of Colorado A Complete Encyclopedia of the State: Resources and Condensed Authentic Descriptions of Every City, Town, Village, Station, Post Officeand Important Mining Camp in the State; Soda, Sulphur, Hot and Medicinal Springs: Summer, Health and Pleasure Resorts: The Mining, Stock Raising and Farming Interests; Where to Hunt, Fish, and View the most Magnificent Scenery in the World Altitudes, Distances, Routes and Fares. In fact it tells you What is Worth Seeing, Where to See It, Where to Go, How to Go, Where to Stop, and What it Costs. ===== These engravings in Crofutt’s Grip-Sack Guide Colorado were probably collected from any handy but divergent source but I expect that some were produced by engravers at Overland Publishing Company (or the Tribune) in Omaha, Nebraska. It is always possible that they worked from photos but it seems more likely that they were transcribed from verbal descriptions. You decide. Colorado was fortunate to have George A. Crofutt tour the state not only once but twice in the era of early Colorado Statehood. The "Encyclopedia" was published once it 1881 and again in 1885 during the bustle of mining activity while agriculture and business hustled to catch up. The raw dreams in a new land spurred the interest in the state and made the Grip-Sack Guides sought-after information for folks in the settled lands to the east. The Grip-Sack Guide claims to be a "Complete 1885 Encyclopedia." All in black ink on white paper. The result is that this is a fine snapshot of early Colorado life, real and inflated. Regardless, this is a wonderfully informative source to understanding early statehood and it is fortunately once again available.
