“Very dark” is how Kelly Hoppen remembers Boy George’s house, pre-renovation. The Culture Club star and gender fluidity trailblazer bought the creaky, creepy Gothic mansion nearly 40 years ago, when hits like 1982’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” and 1983’s “Karma Chameleon” made him, if not royalty, royalty-rich. Built in the 1860s, it […]
Singer George Michael had owned the 16th-century riverside cottage since 1999, before his death in 2016
From 1964 to 1970, George Harrison and Patti Harrison (Boyd) lived in a house in Surrey, England that they painted psychedelically with a little help from their friends. The home, known as Kinfauns, was quintessentially hippie with its Indian-influenced interior and a giant trippy mandala mural, a creation of the Dutch art/music collective The Fool, framing the fireplace. Imagine a Haight-Ashbury crash pad for millionaires. The Harrison’s cosmic hideaway was the setting for Beatle songwriting sessions and the recording of demos for the White Album. It was also a hangout for George’s musician buddies, including Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful, who famously painted a message on the side of the house that read “Mick and Marianne were here & we love you.” In 1969 Patti and George were arrested in their home for possession of a small chunk of hash. The Drugs Squad chose the day of Paul McCartney’s wedding to Linda Eastman to launch a raid on the Harrison home. The bust resulted in a huge media event - an absurd outcome for an inconsequential amount of smoke. But at least we know where the inspiration for the artwork may have originated. A...
Within the past year, I've had a sudden fascination with the English Countryside and tiny villages in England. As much as I loved London (as you can see in the previous post), I would much prefer a quiet country life to a roaring city scene. With the English Countryside, I not only get the beauty of England, but also a calm, surreal setting where the sky is blue and the grass is green. I think anyone with a sense of sanity would prefer the wide open plains in comparison to the smell of exhaust and city smoke. In London, everyone smoked. I'd be walking behind someone and a blaze of cigarette would swirl through the air, hitting me right smack in the face. It wasn't a pleasant feeling whatsoever, and I would much rather see the sky than a cloud of smug. Just take a look at the pictures below and tell me it doesn't look beautiful? Beautiful, right? Going along with the theme of the English Countryside, I thought I'd provide you with several pictures of my favorite English musician's homes. Two of my favorites are the beautiful Plumpton Place, Jimmy Page's former home, and the lush Friar Park, former home of George Harrison. Plumpton Place is my favorite of the two simply because of how subtle its beauty is, whereas Friar Park is gigantic and is almost a little overwhelming. Just take a look for yourself. First is Friar Park. Friar Park Plumpton Place Although some/most of these images are blurry, I hope you could understand and appreciate the beauty of England and its wonderful musicians' homes. So below I've provided some songs that remind me of a calm summer place, preferably Friar Park or Plumpton Place. Home Sweet Friar Park from itsamodmodworld on 8tracks Radio. Why fit in when you were born to stand out? With scale-like wooden shingles and playful yellow-framed arched windows, this ain't your run of the mill West London house, no siree. Office S&M have taken a different approach to revamping this Victorian Terraced House, adding vibrant colours and personality aplenty. The owners of Valetta House, located in Ealing, West London, wanted to modernise their home and create better accommodation for their three young daughters. Featuring a new loft bedroom up top, essentially allowing each child to have their own space in the house, and a generous living space on the ground floor, catering for the grown-ups with rich and sophisticated touches. The converted loft now contains a bedroom and bathroom, with a second bedroom housed in an extension which is clad externally in cedar shingles. The shingles mirror the arched form of the vivid yellow-framed windows, which are commonly found in Victorian properties around the neighbourhood. Architects Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen of Office S&M have created a “child-friendly” house in the broadest sense of the word, adding curves to the walls, a playful snakes-and-ladders bannister to the new room, and an arched window for each child. Meanwhile, the adults are treated to a rich variety of materials, from encaustic floor tiles and glazed herringbone tiles, to fabric banquettes, plywood fingerpulls, and marble handrail ends. A palette of colours and materials were used to reflect warm, yellow light through the spaces. By opening up numerous windows, a view to the hall, and a lightwell past the stair, this warm light created a feeling of volume in the existing Victorian house. Day-to-day and from season to season, the passage of time is marked by changing light conditions throughout the house. As the children grow up, the house will change with them too, with the rounded cedar shingles on the outside, weathering and changing colour over the years. Photography by French+Tye.
