Boucles d'Or et les trois ours illustrated by Gerda Muller is actually available in many languages including English, French and German (Im Bärenhaus) but the illustrations I have to share are with French text, so I am counting this one as a French Month entry. But I can offer descriptions in English, so everyone wins, right? The English and French editions are still in print, the English being the most recent while the German is out of print. Book description: When Goldilocks goes to collect flowers in the wood she gets lost and stumbles upon a pretty house in a clearing. She looks inside and sees a table with three chairs: a big chair, a medium chair and a little chair, and in front of each chair is a steaming bowl of porridge. The porridge smells so good, and Goldilocks is so hungry, that she opens the door and walks inside. But this house belongs to three bears: a big daddy bear, a medium mummy bear and a little baby bear -- and they'll be back soon. This is a beautiful interpretation of a classic story. Gerda Muller's timeless, intricate illustrations offer wonderful extra detail for children to enjoy. From the very first page, she includes big, medium and little versions of birds, squirrels, mice, plates, umbrellas, slippers, and more. Children and parents will notice new things each time. About the Author Gerda Muller was born in 1926 in Naarden, Holland. She attended the Fine Arts School of Amsterdam and later on, Ecole Estienne of Paris. She illustrated over 120 books for children and worked with many publishers. Her books have been translated in many languages. She is the illustrator of four board books for younger children, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, and Where Do They Go When It Rains? (all Floris Books). I do love the detailing in these.

Raidt, Gerda In the New World: A family in Two Centuries Charlesbridge, 2015. $17.95 PICTURE BOOK This book tells the emigration story of a German family as they move from rural Germany to the plains of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. They sell everything and take many forms of transportation to get to their final destination. We leave the family healthy and happy on their new farm. Next the book switches to current times and we see the family that is living in the house today, descendants of the original family. They decide to investigate their history and travel to Germany to see the very first farmhouse that the family owned. This is a fantastic book for both understanding the European emigration process and for cultivating an interest in family history. The artwork was subdued yet harmonious. Would make a great introduction for a unit on family trees or a United States history unit. EL(K-3),EL -ADVISABLE Reviewer: Stephanie Elementary School Librarian & Author.
