One of my favorite gifts to give my children over the years has been the gift of books. I gather books for them throughout the year, slowly (and frugally!) adding to our family library. Sometimes I will hand them to the children immediately, and other times I will stash them away for Christmas, Easter, and […]

Looking for a multisensory way to explore Epiphany with young children? How about an Epiphany Gift Hunt! We're getting ready to celebrate Epiphany (Kings Day) on 6th January & thinking about the gifts that the 3 Wise Men brought to Jesus in the Nativity Story. For the past couple of years I've wrapped 3 gifts to discover & open on Epiphany. They've not been elaborate gifts, just simple tokens that represent the gifts of the 3 Wise Men. This year I used 3 simple gift boxes from Ikea, added a gift to each one, & then hid them around the house ready to be discovered! The first represented gold. Sadly I was lacking in the real stuff, so added chocolate gold coins & a golden star decoration instead. I used the chocolate to reflect all the good things in the world & all that we should be thankful for. It also gave us an opportunity to talk about Fairtrade & the importance of justice & fairness. The decoration reminds us of the star the 3 Kings followed on their journey to Bethlehem, & the faithfulness & courage they displayed. It also helps us to think about how we can share our light, gifts & talents throughout the year with those around us. The next gift represented Myrrh. To symbolise the healing property of this ointment I used a lip balm! This illustrated perfectly how a balm-like Myrrh could be applied to soothe the body when in need of treatment. I added two pots of balm to the box, one to keep, & one to give to someone else. The last gift was frankincense. This is the gift that seems to fascinate children (partly I guess due to its unusual name) so I wanted to add a little of the real thing for her to explore. I found a pretty container a friend had given me a while ago & added a spoonful of frankincense granules, along with a tea light. I loved observing the wonder on my girl's face as she opened these special gifts. The frankincense is a wonderful multi-sensory gift to explore. We're planning to light a candle in the evening & burn the incense alongside to help us think how we can reflect in our own lives the love that Jesus brought into the world. We'll consider how we can care for our neighbours, friends, & those in need around the world, & as a family, we'll choose a charity to support this year. This is a perfect family activity to end the 12 Days of Christmas, & explore a little deeper the Nativity Story, as well as the meaning of those special gifts brought by the 3 Kings.

A few years ago, our parish family "Christmas" celebration actually took place on Epiphany, the celebration of the Wise Men visiting the Infant Christ. Because time for rehearsing a play was out of the question, we instead did a kind of readers' theater with some of the older kids acting as readers. It worked very well, was simple, and shared the message. I think that it could be easily adapted for use with a smaller group or in a classroom. Supplies Needed: Cards with each of the readers’ parts on them. (Script and card printables below) Song sheets or song books with the songs for all participants Eleven empty boxes wrapped with Christmas paper Something to use as a manger Strips of yellow paper Markers Costumes for the readers are optional Here are some of the details for how we made it work: Line up eleven readers- they don’t even have to practice ahead of time. Give them their cards to look at and sit them in the order that they will speak. I had them in a row of chairs with their wrapped present sitting underneath to keep things flowing smoothly. Have yellow strips of paper available with markers on all of the tables for kids and parents. Before the intro, have them write down something that they did during Advent to prepare for Baby Jesus coming. This part could also be done throughout Advent and collected during CCD/Sunday School/in the Classroom/at home. Have everyone face a central “stage”- a table with the manger on it, a stack of straw bales with the manger, etc. When each reader says MY GIFT, have them place a wrapped Christmas present near the manger, and then return to their seat during the song. We took the opportunity to pass out the CCD students’ gifts after the program, emphasizing the connection between our gift giving and the first gifts given to Jesus at Epiphany. Click here for a copy of the supplies, instructions, and script, including the songs that we sang in between each reader. When I did this, I simply cut up a script and glued it on index cards for the readers, but I decided to make it a little nicer for you. :) Click here for the printable of the readers' cards: Happy Epiphany!
Around Christmastime young children will be love making this gift box containing beautiful and fragrant materials representing the wise men’s gifts for Jesus; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then use the box in our Feast of the Epiphany prayer service in early January. We purchased some of these materials, but it will work just as well…

You may have seen it before over the doorway of a Catholic friend: 20+C+M+B+22 chalked on the lintel. This means that your friend’s house has been blessed with a very special, very old custom. The custom echoes the Passover, wherein the Jewish people would sprinkle lamb’s blood over their doorways as an invocation of God’s […]

In the United States, the holiday season brings about traditional tales of Santa Claus, the Three Wise Men, and the Little Match Girl. In Italy, another character takes center stage: La Befana.
By Francesca Montillo, ISDA Food + Travel Writer Drive down any neighborhood in the U.S. a few days after Christmas and you’re likely to see holiday trees at the curb, ready to be picked up by the local trash men.
