Do you ever have one of those days where you hear a song and suddenly, all these memories come flooding back? Music is so powerful, and it can carry so many beautiful stories. Some of my favorite memories are connected to singing songs at Girl Scout events and camps. One amazing way that you can help your Girl Scouts have a fun time in your troops is to learn all the Girl Scout songs, and teach them to your scouts. Now, it is important to note that while I perused the official Girl Scout Songbook, I noticed that there were a lot of mature themes that may not be appropriate, especially for younger girls. There were multiple mentions of kissing, nudity, and death in the songs, which are usually handled in a silly, light way in Girl Scout traditions and songs, but are still not probably topics that would be considered acceptable today. There are also a lot of Christian messages in the songs, which is just important to be mindful of if your scouts aren’t all religious, or come from different religions. You want your scouts to be as comfortable as possible, and be able to focus on their badges. I wanted to share some of my favorite songs that you could easily learn, that are fun, appropriate, and not about any particular faith tradition, to be as inclusive as possible. I highly recommend learning these songs and teaching them to your troop! If you’re interested in checking out more, you can check out the full songbook, but as a troop leader, just make sure to use discretion and consider whether each song will be appropriate and comfortable for young girls. Songs to Learn (With Lyrics): 1. Each Campfire Lights Anew This is a beautiful, sentimental song that will bring a lovely feeling to any campfire with your scouts. You can teach it around the fire while eating s’mores and enjoy the music together, while singing about being new friends. Lyrics: Each campfire lights anew, The flame of friendship true. The joy we’ve had in knowing you Will last the whole year through. And as the embers die away, We wish that we might ever stay, But since we cannot have our way, We’ll come again some other day. And though our paths may part, We’ll keep you in our hearts, And if we chance to meet again, God bless us all, Amen. The campfire light will throw, A warm and friendly glow, A radiance never burning low, Wherever we may go. 2. The Frog Song There are some camp songs that are a lot less serious, and it’s really fun to learn them and sing them with your girls! If you want to get the giggles going, teach your scouts this song and sing it with them in meetings or on hikes. It’s even better to get a good laugh while catching frogs outdoors! Lyrics: (Tune: Brownie Smile Song) I have something in my pocket That I found behind a log My leader said to put it back But I want to keep my frog It’s cool and green and slimy And it squiggles in my hand I also have a wooly worm And a pocket full of sand 3. Walk With Me (AKA Kanga’s Song) This is the perfect song about friendship that will instill good values into your scouts, and help them build relationships with each other. Lyrics: *Chorus* Walk with me and talk with me and, say you’ll be my friend. And together we’ll work out a harmony on a road that will never end. Although our roads are different, just watch as they converge. We’ve gotta job to do together, And our song, it must be heard. *Chorus* We’re sisters for the summer, that’s what the children say, But little do they know when they go away, our friendships will never fade. *Chorus* So when you’re down, I’ll build you up, and when you’re up, I’ll laugh with you, and together we’ll find a peace of mind that only two friends can find. *Chorus* 4. Boom Chicka Boom This song is a classic! Plus, it invites your girls to be creative when they come up with the styles they want to sing about. It’s so fun to create your own words and hand gestures to go along with them. Lyrics: Boom chicka boom (crowd repeats) I said a boom chicka-boom! (crowd repeats) I said a boom-chicka-rocka-chicka-rocka-chicka-boom! (crowd repeats) Uh huh! (crowd repeats) Oh yeah! (crowd repeats) One more time… (crowd repeats) Someone shouts out a style. Choice could be: Faster, slower, whisper, Southern, English, janitor style broom-chicka-broom… then broom-chicka-sweepachicka-sweepa-chicka-broom, valley girl style, photographer style, babystyle, underwater style, motorcycle style (vrooom chicka vroom) I hope teaching each new song to your scouts will help your troop grow closer together and build beautiful memories! If you have more fun campfire songs that you think other troop leaders should learn, please share them below in the comments.

*This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 One of the most important Legacy Badges that transferred with the new Brownie Try It program is the First Aid Try It. While young girls cannot be expected to perform intense kinds of First Aid, they should know what to do in case of an emergency. This is important because as they get older, they will have more responsibilities and will be relied on to do things as meetings and trips become more “girl led”. If you have a resource-a parent who is a doctor or a nurse (or close friend, neighbor or grandparent who is in this field and willing to help out), an EMT or the school nurse is available, this will be a fairly easy meeting for you to lead. The only things you will have to do contact the person who is guest speaking and purchase the supplies for the First Aid Kit. My troop earned the Brownie First Aid badge as their final Try It. (You can read about it here.) Step 1 Find Out How to Get Help From 911 From a young age, children have been taught about the importance of calling 911 in the event of an emergency. Hopefully, none of your girls have had to do this. One activity is to role play different scenarios about when they should call 911. Or you can have the girls stand in the middle of the room and say “Move to the right if you need to call 911, move to the left if you do not have to call 911.” This activity gets them moving and helps those who learn kinesthetically. Some examples to use: Your little sister falls down and scrapes her knee. Your friend or an adult falls down and cannot speak. Your dog or cat gets hurt. Your neighbor’s house is on fire. You and your sibling are fighting. It is important to stress remaining calm and speaking clearly so the dispatch operator can understand you and get help sent as quickly as possible. By Unknown or not provided (U.S. National Archives and Records Administration) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons Step 2 Talk to Someone Who Treats Injured People Step 4 Learn How to Treat Minor Injuries Step 5 Know How to Prevent and Treat Outdoor Injuries These three steps can easily be covered by your guest speaker. Before this meeting, generate a list of questions from the girls so they are prepared with good, informative questions and not on the spot silliness. You do not want to waste your meeting time fielding nonsense, so this is a crucial thing to do before this meeting. Your guest speaker will appreciate your efforts. I recommend creating your questions as an activity at the meeting prior to earning this Try It. Have each girl think of a question to write on an index card. Have her put her name on it and you collect them and hand them out when needed. Let your contact person know what you would like him or her to cover so that s/he can bring any necessary materials to the meeting. This person may be able to provide you with sample for the final meeting activity, making the First Aid kit. Step 3 Making Your First Aid Kit This is a very practical activity for your girls to do and will be something that they can use at any time. You will need to decide what kind of kit you wish for them to create-one that is large or one that is small enough for a backpack. My troop created large ones that could be used in the car or in the house. Some troop leaders prefer smaller ones made from soap containers that hold just a few items. I purchased my large cases at Michael’s Craft Store. Smaller soap containers can be purchased at the Dollar Store or in the travel/sample section of any drug store or big box retailer like Target or Walmart. Tins for a Girl Scout Brownie First Aid Kit This set of 6 tins is a cost effective way to create a DIY First Aid kit for Brownies. Available on Amazon Decorate the tins with washi tape. Before starting tape the numbers to floor and put a set of those numbers in a basket to call numbers as you go. How to play: When the music starts everyone begins to walk around the room stepping on each of the numbers as they go. When the music stops everyone should step on the number closest to them. A number is pulled from the Easter basket and the girl standing on that number gets to choose a cupcake (or other treat). I found these silly putty Easter eggs on Amazon and they are great gifts not always candy! Crayola, Silly Putty Variety Pack, 6 count Bunny Hop (Best for younger girls) Prep: Use pieces of masking tape and bunny footprints. Make your own or use the ones to the right here. How to play: Start playing some Easter music and have girls pretend to be Bunnies and hop around the room. When you stop the music, have the bunnies find footprints to stand on (one girl to a paw-print set). You can eliminate one set of bunny tracks each round till one girl is left. Match the Eggs (great for all ages) Prep: All you need for this game is construction paper, markers and scissors. Draw and decorate a variety of eggs on construction paper and cut the eggs out of the construction paper, and then cut each egg in half. How to play: Hand each girl one egg half, and tell them to find the match to their half. This is a great way to start the party. Guess the Eggs (great for all ages) Prep: Fill a large glass jar with some kind of candy egg, counting them before putting them in. How to play: When each girl arrives have them guess how many eggs in jar. Whoever is the closest to correct egg count would when the jar of candy. Egg and Spoon Race (great for all ages) Prep: You will need plastic spoons and a hard boiled or raw egg depending on how messy you want to get 🙂 How to play: Put girls in two teams and give first person in each team a spoon and egg. The girl must balance the egg on the spoon and walk to one end of room and back and give to next girl in line. First team to get every girl thru with egg on spoon wins. If you go with raw eggs and they break it have lots of extras, girl must clean up mess and then pass spoon to next girl with new egg. You can have a winning team that uses the least amount of eggs as well (This version best done outside) Olympic Style Easter Egg Hunt (best for older girls) Instead of the usual Easter egg hunt you do every year. This year try a different style…lets call it the Easter Olympics! Prep: You will need a few things for this activity: Lots of Easter eggs (If you need them amazon has a great deal on 288 eggs – Easter Eggs Assortment 288 ct.) Treats(prizes), Coins and/or dollar bills, Toys, Gold Coins, Jelly Beans, Pink Felt, Markers, Poster Board, Scissors. Fill the eggs with the prizes money candy whatever you decide to give girls How to play: This Easter egg hunt you will award three winners a Golden egg, silver egg, and bronze egg champions just like the Olympics. So keep track of scores through each part of the Olympic game. Part 1: The first hunt use half the Easter eggs. Scatter them around the yard and/or inside meeting space and everyone has 15 minutes to collect as many eggs as they can. Whoever comes in first, second and third places, receives the prizes in those eggs and gets one point each. Part 2: The next part of the Olympic Easter Egg Hunt is a bunny hop competition where girls have to hop from one Easter egg to another. Relay style everyone together on a line hops to 4 different eggs picking up as they go. Girl to get to end first, second third wins. Those girls gets one point each and receives a special prize. Part 3: divide your girls into groups and let them each build a bunny. Hand out enough markers, scissors pieces of poster board, felt bunny ears-you can make these by cutting pieces of pink felt purchased at a craft store-and any other bunny type attire. Each group has to make a bunny out of the provided materials. Which ever groups finish building a bunny in the least amount of time and actually makes something that resembles a bunny, wins the points and prize for round. Part 4: Now have girls finish the Easter egg hunt and find the other half of eggs. Who ever finds most wins. Add up all the points from all 4 parts. The three winners get prizes awarded in gold, silver, and bronze. I would recommend a typical Easter egg hunt for your Daisy and Brownie girls. EGG Balloon Balance (great for all ages) Blow up about 10-15 balloons and place them on the floor. Each guest has 2 minutes (use a timer) to pick up and hold as many balloons as possible. They must pick up the balloons all by themselves without help, put them in their clothes, between their legs, under their arms, between their teeth, etc. Each guest takes a turn while the others watch and laugh themselves silly! The guest who holds the most balloons when their time is up is the winner. Guess what egg is boiled and which is raw? (great for all ages) Have 12 eggs with 6 that are boiled and 6 that are raw. Number them 1 – 12, then have girls look at them and guess which ones are which no touching just looking! Then after everyone guesses take each one ask a girl to volunteer who thought it was boiled and break it over their hand. Girls will have fun just be sure to have wipes to clean hands. This would be great for the courageous and strong petal. Spring and Easter Bingo, Card and 4 Corner Game Activity Booklet You will enjoy playing three fun games with your girls. Did you ever see a bunny, fluff his tail He fluffs and flaps and fluffs and flaps Did you ever see a bunny, fluff his tail Easter Craft Easter Bonnet Contest (great for all ages) Prep: Gather a pile of craft supplies the girls can use to make a Easter Bonnet. As for the actual bonnet you can either collect money and purchase before meeting for each girl, buy out of supplies, or have each girl bring a hat to use as a bonnet. How to: Give the girls time to create their bonnets, then have girls put on and put on some Easter music and let them each model their Easter bonnet. Have fun with your girls.
