American Gladiators
Tombstone of a Provocator gladiator, Roman, from Ephesus, third century CE. This heavily armed, slow-moving gladiator wears a pectoral protecting his upper chest (the only type of gladiator who did so), a large helmet, an arm-protector, and one greave; he carries a large curved rectangular shield and a short sword or dagger. His feet clearly testify to the fact that most gladiators apparently fought with bare feet for better purchase in the sand of the arena. Berlin, Pergamon Museum.
