The Handblown Glasswork of Scott Hartley
Glass artist Janis Miltenberger draws on the roles of mythology and storytelling as attempts to explain our experience of the world to build complex glass sculptures. Her work often takes the shape of recognizable objects, like human figures and chairs, which are then filled with incredible detail. The artist uses borosilicate glass, and enhanced with glass colors, gold luster, sandblasting, and oil paint. Miltenberger shares with Colossal that she was originally drawn to ceramics, and discovered glassblowing in college, where she apprenticed with Richard Marquis. More

The vivid hues and liquid lines of blown art glass create an unmissable accent. Made in Italy circa 1960, expressive glasswork forms a bold silhouette. Organic and abstract, reminiscent of a water droplet captured in slow motion. A luminous gradient of color emphasizes the dramatic shape, its hues shifting from emerald green to a translucent flush. The upturned rim makes a spectacular backdrop for arranging fruit or florals —or simply admired as an art object in its own right. less
