Federal troops en route to Goldfield, Nevada, 1907. Labor unrest there led mine owners to petition Gov. John Sparks to request that President Theodore Roosevelt send in the army to restore order. Miners' unions denounced the owners' reports as hyperbole, but by 1908, George Wingfield and other corporate titans had effectively siezed control of the district.
