A NASA science instrument flying aboard the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft has made a very surprising discovery – namely that the molecular breakup mechanism of “water and carbon dioxide molecules spewing from the comet’s surface” into the atmosphere of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is caused by “electrons close to the surface.” The surprising results relating … Continue reading "Rosetta Discovery of Surprise Molecular Breakup Mechanism in Comet Coma Alters Perceptions"

It was one of the most audacious space missions ever. How did it feel to be part of the Rosetta team as it touched down on a comet? As the spacecraft nears its closest approach to the Sun, Richard Hollingham recounts the drama, the disappointments and the jubilation of a 30-year quest.
ESA's Rosetta today witnessed Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko making its closest approach to the sun. The exact moment of perihelion occurred at 02:03 GMT this morning when the comet came within 186 million km of the sun.

Wow! Rosetta is getting ever-closer to its target comet by the day. This navigation camera shot from Aug. 23 shows that the spacecraft is so close to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko that it's difficult to fit the entire 2.5-mile (four-kilometer) comet in a single frame.
