Katie Sciarrino ksciarrino.wordpress.com flickr.com/photos/ksciarrino The hardest part of this challenge was choosing the what color to choose, then the rest came together nicely. I sketched it out and focused on using several techniques I've used in the past: raw edged ruffles, machine applique, quilt-as-you-go and free motion pebble quilting. I was inspired by Anthropologie, winter, cloud-scapes, texture and randomness. Fabrics used were: Terry Cloth, Kaffe Fasset satin, woven linnen, Kona solid light gray, mini corduroy, solid white, assortment of white/gray patterns, Basic Gray's ruled paper (also used for binding binding) and backed with a subtle gray-white striped fabric.
Neutral prints are the hottest trend in home decorating, and this taupe and gray quilt looks perfect with today's furniture and paint colors.

A Look Back at Favorite Quilts is a blog post that showcases a collection of the author's favorite quilts they have made over the year. The post includes pictures of each quilt along with a brief description of the pattern and the fabrics used.
Hi! sorry I've been quiet..... Its School holidays here in Sydney Australia & everything in my normal working week goes out the window. 3/4 of the kids go back to school tomorrow - fingers crossed I get all my bits n pieces finished off this week and handed over. I've had a few emails asking about fabrics I had used in recent quilts that appeared in Modern Patchwork I very excitingly had three quilts appear in the new Interweave publication & one was on the cover :) The Fabrics for the Yellow wide Stripe quilt - all the text fabric is from my spoonflower BeaSpokeQuilts shop - The yellow flower is a Robert Kaufman Fabric - White homespun - The binding is a grey & white honeycomb - the yellow check is Unknown! I bought it as an end of bolt special at Material Obsession a long long time ago (before they moved), If anyone can help name it Id appreciate it or even maybe let me know of a similar fabric design thats currently around? The Fabric for the Monochromatic Text Quilt is all from my spoonflower designs BeaSpokeQuilts Fabric Shop & the binding is the grey & white honeycomb again the back is pieced of all my left over bits n pieces The Linen Square Block Quilt is Made out of - Natural linen - the inside square is linen - the first frame is Liberty of London pink Paisley - the second frame is Isso Echo, it might be tricky to find - the third frame is Anna Maria Horner Little Folks Village Path - the fourth is by Working CLOTH although it appears the pink is no longer made! Hopefully that helps.... If not then let me know how I can help by commenting on this post or Im also on twitter Below is a bit of a look at what I have achieved in the holidays This is the Swoon block I've been working on, I'm waiting on more fabric to arrive from my Spoonflower shop so that I can finish it all off. below is a bit of a look at a project I did for the Fat Quarterly Team This one was done earlier in the year - I'm busting to show you all and here I have some bits and pieces from a quilt I'm making for The Lovely Ladies at CLOTH Fabric Its a great weight fabric to work with and fantastic colour range. Have a sticky beak at the online store - they currently have some swatch book bundles for sale which would make a great addition to a quilt. Fingers Crossed for a productive week....... Xx Siobhan
Why work on just one queen size quilt when you can work on two at the same time? Thanks so much for all the love here and on IG for the Modern Fans Quilt (post here and here). Indeed I loved making that quilt (but then I can't remember the last quilt I didn't enjoy making) but all the new components of that project required focus. Making this Trip Around the World quilt was like therapy. Everything about it was lovely, calming and relaxing. Even though it is the biggest quilt I've ever made (just a few inches larger than the Modern Fans) I was a little sad to have it finished. The pattern is of course the tutorial by Quiltville. This is the second quilt I've finished using that pattern (the first is here) so I was familiar with the technique. Digging into my stash for low volume fabrics with a gray leaning created a colossal mess in the sewing room but was quite rewarding. That is, until I realized that even with the fabric requirements of a queen size quilt I was barely making an impact on my low volume stash! See my 2019 goal post for more on that challenge! Calculating the number of blocks I would need for a queen, I cut over 400 strips of some of my favorite fabric. Over a month or so I would sew up 10 blocks at a time and unpick the seams (see the tutorial as to why this is done) while relaxing at night watching TV. And soon enough, there were 72 beautiful blocks. Keeping with the therapeutic nature of this project, I just placed them on my design wall and didn't stress too much about the adjacencies of each block. This picture is the layout in process with my not quite queen size design wall. Table basting to save the back and knees!! Ah then the quilting. Over several days I quilted a leafy pattern completely covering the quilt. The flowing, repetitive movement of the leaves was so enjoyable to quilt and it adds a lovely softness to all those little blocks. Several hours of hand sewing the binding later, the quilt was finished. At least I know the quilt went to a good home and I can visit it whenever I want! My son and daughter in law loved the quilt and we had fun photographing it on a gray Christmas Eve outside their lovely antique home. Let's talk about the backing. It's Charley Harper Birch organic Western Birds and the best part is that it was a wide backing piece that I had in my stash! It takes a lot of hands to hold a queen size quilt up. Those birds are almost sitting on the leaves in the quilting. Sorry about all the pictures but I do love this quilt!! Although I had plans to finish three bed size quilts for my three sons for Christmas, I ran out of gas and gave one son an I.O.U. in the form of fabric selected for his quilt. He knows I'm good for it! Have a great day, Kathy
My gray and white chevron quilt is complete! This is made with the same fabrics as my Gray Patchwork Quilt. I love these neutrals! This one is larger - it measures about 40x53" and is the perfect size for a couch blanket to snuggle under when your husband turns the air conditioning too low (or is that just me?!). I love that the shades of gray would compliment pretty much any home decor and looks pretty fabulous with all the blues in my house. The quilting emphasizes the chevron pattern with repeating zig zags in the white fabric. The backing is B&W. This quilt is for sale - please contact me if you'd like it for your home! UPDATED: SOLD!
Universe V | denim, cotton | machine pieced and quilted | 1,60 x 1,36 m/ 63 x 54 | 2021 This series was created in the period 2016 -2021. The idea for it are pictures that appear in my mind, then I cut out countless squares and then I puzzled as long as it corresponded to the picture in my head. Despite the formally same structure and the same material, all variations are very different in their colourfulness and expression. The quilting of the three layers in these works is done exactly in the seam, so that you can only see the seams from the backside. This work is very suitable as a wall hanging in a shop or cafe due to the calming effect of the blue and white combination.

I’m so used to either pastels or brights even pink or blue baby quilts, that I was totally out of my comfort zone when my girlfriend requested a modern grey and white only baby quilt. No Applique or any other colours so I started thinking...what should I do. They say simple is best so I went for s herringbone pattern with a soft grey with white crosses teamed with a solid white. A very simple straight line quilting completed the look and I must admit, I was very happy with the end result. My first modern quilt!!

Guess what??? I got so busy, I forgot to actually finish this post before I posted it :-0 lol! When I saw this quilt by Jenny of Sew Kind of Wonderful I knew that I would have to make one for myself! NMQG's opening challenge for 2016 is going to be a color challenge. (Yippee!!) As a member of the board, we all drew a color and I got blue! (I HATE blue) I tired to cheat and drew another crayon out of the bag and got BROWN!!! (The other most ugly color in the WORLD!!) Anyhoots, when I took a moment to look at the blues in my stash, I realized that if I start on the color wheel, just the blue side of green and go all the way to just the blue side of purple, there is a pretty amazing array of colors! I had so much fun pulling all of the blues from my stash. I did my best to divide the fabrics into saturated and low volume. There were quilt a few of my favorite prints in the lot. I made this whole quilt while I was at a getaway sew week with my friends in Park City. I cut and sewed like a madwoman for two solid days. The more I sewed, the more I fell in love! Eventually the top was finished and it was time to go home :( Due to the crazy busy holiday season, I didn't get to quilt this beauty until after New Year's. ...but boy, it was worth the wait! I decided to do a curved crosshatch. ...and lots and lots of narrow curves. I just love all of the texture. This quilt pattern is so amazing and fun to look at! Sorry, I am crazy in love :) For the backing one of my quilting BFF's found an amazing black and white script fabric. The binding is my favorite black and white on the bias. I am so sad that this quilt is so small :( I thought it was going to be bigger. If I were more brave, I would have made it four times bigger. ...but alas, I am lazy and have way too much other work to do! Now enjoy photos of my grandchildren and the quilt. The couldn't possibly hold still, so the pics are pretty bad! lol I love these two so very much. Being a grandma is the BEST! Poor Livy Lou is always being steamrolled by Benito! Good thing she can hold her own! Pattern: Chic Country by Sew Kind of Wonderful
Just Completed and restocked! The very popular gender-neutral quilt. This beautiful quilt made from several coordinating gray and white fabrics with little pops of color on the corners. This quilt is so beautiful and would make a great addition to your little one's nursery or as a lap quilt. It measures 48.5 X 43 inches and is the perfect size for a crib or for tummy time for your little one. The neutral color makes this quilt gender neutral. The back is a solid soft gray cotton. Made from cotton with poly-fil batting.

This is Sandra’s Modern Grey and White Neutrals quilt and there is a tutorial on the Diary of a Quilters blog here. I actually was Sandra’s personal shopper for this quilt as I picked out the fabrics for her when I was down in Swan River teaching at Fabriculous. A lot of the fabrics are Zen Chic fabrics from the Modern Background Essentials line but we through in a few other fabrics to give it more variety. The HST blocks are squared up to 7 1/2” and Sandra made her layout a bit bigger from the tutorial instructions by adding more blocks. She asked for a swirly panto so I picked Bora Bora. I used white So Fine thread and Quitlers Dream Blend batting. She made this quilt for a wedding gift for a young couple that has decorated their house in all grey and neutrals so it should fit in beautifully! Well our weather has changed drastically in the last week from freezing temperature and snow to sunny 27’c today! Time to get out the kayaks!
King size handmade quilt that measures 100 x 100 inches. Monochrome quilt that is mostly grays and 100 percent cotton in a geometric pattern. Sewn and quilted on my domestic sewing machine in a pet free and smoke free home.
