A great blue heron portrait taken by me here in the wetlands of Southwest Florida for your favorite bird lover. My name is Dror Orbach and I am a nature photographer who loves landscapes and wildlife, particularly bird photography. I took this photo from a dock at Puerto Ayora, a city on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. The island archipelago, part of Republic of Ecuador, is located around the Equator, at 906 km (563 mi) west of continental Ecuador. It is known for its large number of endemic species that were studied by Charles Darwin during the second voyage of HMS Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution. I set out to explore the area witness the diverse wildlife and natural habitats there. Since Great Blue Herons frequent North America as well, I was not particularly looking for them in the Galapagos Islands. I later learned that the great blue heron is only partially migratory, and that those who live in the Galapagos generally stay there year round. Looking at the bird, I noticed that while they usually stand very still looking for prey, this one was hopping between rocks on the beach of the Pacific Ocean. I decided to wait patiently to try and catch it mid-jump. I was eventually rewarded with this image, which I feel very privileged to have been able to capture and share in print.
