MSNBC is reporting that Australian band Men at Work copied a well-known children’s campfire song for the flute melody in its 1980s hit “Down Under” and owes the owner years of royalties. “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree” was written more than 70 years ago by Australian teacher Marion Sinclair for a Girl Guides competition. Federal Court Justice Peter Jacobson said, “I have come to the view that the flute riff in “Down Under” ... infringes on the copyright of Kookaburra because it replicates in material form a substantial part of Ms. Sinclair’s 1935 work,”He ordered the parties back in court Feb. 25 to discuss the compensation Larrikin should receive from songwriters Colin Hay and Ron Strykert and Men at Work’s record companies Sony/BMG Entertainment and EMI. Justiced served! In other news, I do still think "Down Under" is a worthy jam.

World Thinking Day is celebrated by Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world on 22nd February each year. Its aim is to bring together children from all over the world (nearly 150 countries take part) to celebrate international friendships, raise money and think about a global theme, which is changed each year. Boy Scouts also mark 22nd February but call it Founders Day. Our World, Our Thriving Future The theme for Thinking Day in 2024 is "Our World, Our Thriving Future". “The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.” Lady Bird Johnson We have many activities and resources here at Activity Village that may help you celebrate World Thinking Day and that coincide with the themes of connecting to nature and environmental sustainability.

One of our favorite days of the year, World Thinking Day, is coming up fast on February 22, and we’re soooo excited! Every year (since 1926!) we use this day to rally our global sisterhood and support girls as they travel internationally, connect with sister Girl Guides, and take action on global issues to make the world a better place like only Girl Scouts can. This is a day to give thanks for the inspiring international friendships that we as Girl Scouts are a part of, and to celebrate the many ways these friendships enrich our lives, expand our worldviews, and drive us to create meaningful change for everyone. This year, we encourage you to use this day (and every day!) to connect with your Girl Scout “forever friends” by donating to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund, supporting girls as they build incredible global skills through eye-opening, awe-inspiring travel experiences. But why stop there? There are tons of other fun and creative ways to connect this World Thinking Day, and to share friendship and adventure on a global scale with so many amazing girls and women! For example, you can: 1. Make new friends! Hold a “bring a friend” event with the girls in your troop or group. You might plan a trip to a local park or museum and have each girl bring someone to join in on the fun. Make sure to think of some cool games everyone can play to get to know one another better! 2. Spread good vibes! Send positive messages to Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world by posting to social media with the hashtag #WTD2016. Let them know how much they’re appreciated, and encourage all your followers to donate to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund! 3. Honor through service! Get together with a group of family members or friends and plan a service project to honor all the amazing things Girl Scouts and Girl Guides do for their communities every day. Share a fun pic on Facebook and Instagram, along with a summary of what you did. Don’t forget the hashtag #WTD2016! Have a cool idea for connecting this World Thinking Day? Share it with us on Facebook and Twitter today! And if you’d like to earn your very own World Thinking Day Award, check out more awesome activities you can do.

Trying to fit it all in... Last weekend after Ryan and Charlie had softball Opening Day, they had to rush over to their Girl Scouts Opening Day. Each troop picks a country to study and teach the other troops with a skit or song. Ryan's troop chose Japan this year. Charlie's troop was brand new this year so they just came to observe and learn. Guess which mom was in charge of making the display poster for Japan? Yes, me of course. LOL! Ryan helped me to make it just right. I must say, I was pretty proud. I was able to fit all of the girls' artwork and origami plus add some trinkets to learn about Japan. Ryan's troop sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" in Japanese. So cute. They all look the same. Can you find Ryan? Good job Brownie troop 407! Any girl scouts out there reading this? Do you remember the friendship circle? They still do it today. "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold..." Charlie's Daisy Troop. Mother of the Year forgot to pack Charlie's Daisy smock because we had to come straight from softball. She was so mad at me. :-(
