Life-size statue portrays Hachi leaping to greet his owner, who commuted by train to Tokyo where he unexpectedly died. Hachi then spent years waiting at the train station until he died, too.
Sculptor Takeshi Ando who created a bronze statue of storied dog Hachiko in Tokyo died of pneumonia at the age of 95.
Hachiko became such a permanent fixture at the train station he attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachi and Professor Ueno together each day. Realizing that Hachiko waited in vigil for his dead master, their hearts were touched and many brought Hachiko treats and food to nourish him during his wait.

Cast in bronze, Hachiko sits in a position of prominence befitting a storied daimyo or prime minister, right next to the busiest intersection in Japan, if not the world.
