My August-September issue of The Quilter has this Halloween quilt I could not resist. I've been resisting buying fabric for quite awhile, but what can I say, "Witch Way" bewitched me! I really think it's the vintage panel prints that got me. I'm a sucker for these old nostalgic prints. Especially the large old fashioned black Cat face, and the Moon with the spider web, and the old Witch riding through the night Moon on her broom...the fabric was calling me on this one. The orange in the fabrics is more of a burnt or cheddar orange. I ordered the kit from Heartbeat Quilts just as soon as I saw the magazine. I've come to the conclusion after all these years that for special projects like this, it is time saving and money saving to simply buy the kit. One important thing: you need the magazine for the cutting directions. That is not mentioned in the magazine article. Maybe they offer the pattern for sale at Heartbeat Quilts. I have it all cut out now---and the kit was very generous with the fabrics, so I have extra leftover. Thankfully I didn't make any mistakes cutting (that I know of)---so, I'm set to go. Even though this is a "kit", the cutting took me a whole day to do. I was surprised it took that long, perhaps because I was being so careful measuring and cutting. Labeling everything. This is one of my new piecing projects for the upcoming quilt retreat in October. Maybe I will actually get it finished for Halloween this year! Witch Way by Helen Weinman. The Quilter Magazine. Page 84. The finished quilt measures 52" x 75" 15 blocks total. Measured, cut, labeled, stored and---Ready to Sew! The cute Witch Way fabric is by Quilting Treasures' Hairrasing Halloween Collection by J. Wecker Frisch. A few of the vintage Witch Way panel prints. Love that Moon print!

I can't think of a better way to start October than kicking it off with a new Halloween project. I've been talking about making a jar quilt for years now. Even found a great border fabric for it last year. But time got away from me. Fast forward a year... ...after looking thru tons of fun jar quilt photos online, I made a plan. Being the poor pattern designer that I am, I turned to things I have around the house to help me. Enter, a metal Christmas cookie tray. (I knew it had to have a dual purpose) LOL!!! It worked great for the scallops on my jar cabinet! Yep, I'm a pencil and paper kind of girl. I just play around, until I find something that seems like it might work. Filling those shelves is where the fun began. I participated in a jar swap years ago, with Fat Cat Patterns. While I don't see the patterns for the jars on Sindy's site anymore, it's easy enough to draw up a few simple jar shapes. For my lids, I used ironing board cover fabric. Having collected so many fun Halloween prints, I wanted to use as many as I could, so I made my shelves tall enough to stack jars. I even managed to sneak in some Ghastlie's into my jars! I do love those Ghastlies... They make you feel like your family is pretty darn normal, don't they? hahahahaha Different heights of jars and laying some jars on their sides, really added some interest. What could be more interesting than bats getting loose right? ;-) Witches escaping... Ghosts flying... a search online for Halloween cutouts and clip art proved to be very useful. Thankfully we have endless access to ideas online. It's a gold mine, for a girl who can't draw! The skeleton I put on a stand, is a pattern that Marian over at Seams to be Sew shared last year with us during our Halloween Blog hop. You can find that pattern right HERE Topping off my cabinet is a Mr. October from from Fun Threads Designs. Everyone needs a Calendar boy on their shelf! tee hee.... You can find him right HERE What a fun time it was digging thru patterns, searching online, and coming up with something all my own. "SEW" what's on your shelves????? If this has got you starting to think Halloween, you won't want to miss out on a couple of fun things coming to you this month... First off starting Tuesday... A fun "linky" party, Bernie at Needle and Foot is hosting. See what bloggers from all over the web are up to! and Eerie Nights Blog Hop. The fun begins Oct 20th and dares to scare! Yes, I will, I'll see you there! (Oh gheez, I'm such a poet, aren't I?) ;-) Keep on Stitchin'

Hocus Pocus is designed as a skill-builder pattern comprised of 17 different blocks, some that repeat. The pattern utilizes several methods for quilt construction including traditional piecing, foundation paper-piecing, templates, and a small bit of applique. The pattern is fully illustrated with a breakdown of steps, block by block. Cutting charts and illustrated diagrams are provided for each block. A coloring sheet is provided so you can swap out colors, or you can go scrappy and mix it up block by block. Hocus Pocus is an intermediate pattern and assumes you have general knowledge about basic foundation paper-piecing, inset circles, y-seams and applique or feel comfortable googling general instruction for those methods. Looking to challenge yourself or learn new skills? This pattern is for you! A few more quilt pictures from 2011. The next two quilt were pieced by Dale Fisher. She likes to see the quilting, so she chooses a solid backing fabric.
