Click here to find my GYB/Give-Away post. Every now and then I like to write what I label as my "Life and Learning" posts. Flowers from my "work son". I've actually been a little worried about my lack of sewing mojo this past month. I have found myself not wanting to do anything. This lack of motivation begun to worry me especially as I just couldn't shake this "stomach virus" I had. Well come to find out, what was first thought to be a stomach virus ended up being a gallblader attack! Now, two very painful weeks later (and six pounds lighter...well THAT's a bonus!) I had surgery this past Friday to FINALLY remove the darn thing! YAH !! So as I begin to awake and finally remove all my hospital "bracelets" and surgery is behind me, I 'm getting myself "set up" in my studio for the week of recovery ahead of me. I accept it's time to take a break. (I don't really have a choice do I! LOL!) But life has taught me to make the best of it. And you know Jackson will be right by my side! No one likes being sick. Pain and illness makes us weak and unmotivated. Yet, it also makes me empathetic. It reminds me why so many of us enjoy donating quilts. My youngest daughter asked me once: "Don't you ever get tired of making quilts? I mean how many can you make till you get bored?" The answers: Never and a Million as quilting and creating keep me sane! Do you ever feel the same way? Even while I'm sick, I'm looking forward to creating some "made-fabric". It won't require any standing and involves minimal cutting. It will be fun! Later in the week I hope to finish my ABC quilt and will also enjoy some handstitching and reading. I've also let myself get lost in the world of Pinterest for awhile and found these fun Valentine mug rugs . Andddd....totally random I know, but I'm totally doing this the next time it snows! Here's a shortcut to my Hearts Board if ya want to take a peek at what else I found! Finally, I want to make Valentines for my Second Graders while I'm home recovering and found this at Plucky Momo's Blog. (She has free printables for the tags too.)Thought I'd share what I found in case you have little ones in your life, you might be inspired too: I love the month of February.Valentine's Day is my very favorite holiday and the hubby and I celebrate our 26th Anniversay! As I find myself on the mend, I'll close for now by sending healthy wishes & smiles to you all. Val:)

Happy Valentine’s Day! I wanted to share with you all some of my art quilts that feature hearts. Below, this features crazy quilt techniques, embellished with found objects. You can see my signature on this: created in 2005! I’ve always appreciated this sentiment from Liz Kettle, from her Plethora of Pinked Hearts tutorial she shared with us years ago: “When I was in my formative art years, hearts were passé, trite and so unsophisticated Somewhere along the way I realized that even if they were trite in the ‘serious’ art world I had fallen in love with them! I make my art to please myself these days, so even if the sophisticated shock artists of the world roll their eyes and dismiss me as trite... I am contented with my hearts.” Love the locket half, and the fun beaded fringe. The charm titles this one: Love. Detail above: needlefelted heart that combines scraps of wool, cotton, silk and more, encrusted with beads. I’ve often used vintage wooden clothes hangers to hang my art quilts. Beaded details: left, the stripes on these yellow beads were perfect to enhance the vintage fabrics grid, and my blue flower beads were a near-exact match to embellish this border! Beaded blue wool hearts appliquéd to needlefelted bases, then stitched to a hand-dyed wool base that had been bordered with cotton and machine quilted. Detail above: it’s fun to sneak in accent beads, like this ladybug, to see who notices. Remember, Valentine wishes don’t have to be red or pink or lacy to be heartfelt!

I've finished the quilt I started last week. I got my sewing machine back yesterday. I still feel like something isn't quite the same but I'll use it for a bit and see.

Please click on the links above to see the original photos The setting sun was casting it's golden glow I love to use beach finds in my work. Most recently I've enjoyed making more rockpool hearts for friends that have been so generous to me and more are in progress The setting sun was casting it's golden glow My rockpool hearts each incorporate pieces of heat distressed chiffon/sheers/ribbons, torn vintage crocheted cotton lace, dupion silk, torn raw edged velvets, stitched text relating to the seaside, found shells, beads and little hand stitches Pebble beaches For this rockpool heart I used fly stitches for coral shapes. The heated sheers resemble bits of crinkly seaweed and I used limpet shells sewn down. I like the layers and colours in this one with lots of texture on top Stillest of summer afternoons Stillest of summer afternoons - detail Stillest of summer afternoons - detail To the sea I think this one resembles an underwater garden. I used linen, torn crocheted lace, floral lace in brown/silver, limpet shells, beads, french knots and an eyelash yarn couched down to resemble coral or seaweed Far out at sea Spring morning is stitched in warm coral tones. I used pieces of plastic woven bag, threads couched down, shells, beads, charms, french knots. Lots of pieces of fabric were hand stitched down with running stitches, sequins and sheers distressed to resemble crinkly seaweed Spring morning Spring morning - detail I used a mussel shell that was the palest blue. It matched with the silvery blue chiffons that sparkled with glitter and reminded me of stars and moonlight reflecting in the darkness of rockpool water at night time. I used very dark beads in midnight blue and dark chocolate brown with french knots and more of the crocheted lace Under the midnight sky I think this last one is my favourite. I made it for a blog buddy but I think I may have to make another one just like it! I have already made more rockpool hearts and more are in progress. My ideas and themes are determined by the text I choose to use and the shells inspire the colour scheme for my rockpool hearts. I love that each one is unique I would love to know what inspires your work. What gets you fired up? I hope you have a good week Carolyn ♥

Last week there was a lot of noise outdoors : it turned out to be the noise of a chainsaw (which makes me nervous most of the time) Some man were busy on the little island right on the other side of the water next to our garden. I looked in terror : Would they really ? ........ Noooo ! the gorgeous weeping willows In a devastating trapeze act the man were decimating the two trees untill ... there were only two pitiful remnants instead of two majestic trees ( "it will be for the best" the Parks Department will probably say ... yuk !) This tiny creature gave me more fun : Lissotriton vulgaris (a newt) he (or she) was hiding with another sibling and mum under the geraniums (but the picture of the three of them wasn't sharp enough) * And indoors the stitching on the sunny heart piece went on and on ... After all the "sun rays" were there (in rainbow colours) the magic thread was stitched in place. Which left me only with the invisible basting of the backside which I did today ! "A warm heart" will be send of to France tomorrow to a very dear friend (and namesake)

I'd love to share with you the things that are inspiring me at the moment and the colours that are finding their way into my work ... aqua seas, turquoise oceans, pale gold, yellow sand beaches and soft early summer orange tones this past week I made two hearts inspired by the colours of the ocean and beach as I love to do ... I heated the fabrics to resemble watery textures and added french knots, beads, shells and gold stitches in a vast turquoise ocean the limpet shells came from St. Ives beach and I added a small dangly of seed beads with an aqua accent bead and there is some text too ... I love the words in a vast turquoise ocean I put the hearts in my etsy shop and was delighted when both sold almost immediately resting by the water side so I wrapped each of the hearts as lovingly as possible in tissue paper with an art tag, thread and a pretty bead or button this tag was monoprinted on vintage paper (a fish recipe) with gold angelina fibres, a button and text and I'm happy that both hearts are on their way to new owners the weather in St. Ives has been all over the place recently with thundery skies, heavy rain and squally gusts but it never stays like that for long before the sun shines again and since I started writing this post we have had nothing but rain and Cornish mizzle so I've been keeping busy painting new beads for the shop as I've almost sold out save for one packet and while I had my paints out I've been monoprinting and painting on bondaweb which I will use on more tags in the colours I associate with St. Ives they remind me of beach streams and the seashore's edge and I'm stitching into the transfers so will show soon we had more moody skies on Wednesday and I loved the way the sunlight was falling on the sea sparkling Porthminster beach I also love this painting by Stewart Edmondson which has that lovely shimmering sunlight sparkling on the sea I saw his original work in a gallery in Dartmouth earlier this year and I fell in love with the work of this artist (take a look) all of his paintings are beyond beautiful Stewart Edmondson magic of the sea also loving this painting by Elaine Pamphillon which reminds me of the landscape, seascape and countryside I visit quite often between St. Ives and St. Just only last week I had a trip on the open top bus to Geevor, Morvah and St. Just (more about that in the next post) the views are exhilerating no matter the weather but it's almost always very chilly on the open top bus (worth it though!) Lamorna these are a few of the monoprints I made with acrylics and luminous paints on vintage recipe pages and tissue paper love monoprinting - it's fun! then I tore them up to make art tags for my parcels this one looks nice tied with thread and a gold anchor button the luminous paint shimmers like sunlight on the sea and I added some gold paper, chiffons and a few little beads the sparkle of the water this is the other heart I made which is inside this parcel it has many layers of chiffon ocean decorated with beads, buttons, copper curls and little stitches an accent bead dangly and fibres couched down add a bit of texture layers of the ocean this one is called "sun bathed coast" and now it's on it's way to Australia more of my textured beads made from Tyvek inspired by this tangle of fishing nets and rusty chains from the pier at St. Mawes a few weeks ago and this is a photograph I took on St. Ives pier of ropes and fishermens' pots love that view of St. Ives cottages through the gap the colourful ropes inspired a colour study in this mosaic for Mosaic Monday two weeks ago (I'm afraid I'm a bit behind with everything) fragility 1.
