My Beautifull
Charlton Heston as Gordon in KHARTOUM
Charlton Heston, The Ten Commandments.
Whatever else I think of “Ben Hur,” there’s a line that gets to me now. Judah is speaking about his family’s downfall, and his friend Messala’s role in it: “The deed was not Messala’s. I knew him, well, before the cruelty of Rome spread in his blood. Rome destroyed Messala as surely as Rome has destroyed my family.” The character may have been speaking out of love, absolving his friend of responsibility and blaming the system. How much should I hold people I loved and trusted responsible for what is happening in America now? Was it just misinformation and Trumpism that made them act so viciously against their fellow people? Or was there a darkness in them all along? And where do I draw the line and decide their complicity is unacceptable?
