Citing traditional portraiture and figurative ceramics, London-based artist Claire Partington (previously) sculpts grand characters with a dose of contemporary wit: Lavishly outfitted women lose their heads to anthropomorphized octopuses, a flip flop-wearing fairy dozes alongside empty beer bottles, and sneakers and a cellphone lie next to “Sleeping Beauty.” Infused with mythological symbols and references to folklore, the delicate figurines meld history and culture across time periods and prompt questions about interpretation and narrative. London-based artist Claire Partington creates figurative ceramic vessels steeped in power dynamics and status. Her works often feature removable head stoppers of humans and animals, which bring a range and versatility to each glazed character. Her inspiration for the elegant figures comes mostly from European applied art and design styles from the 17th-century onward, yet the pieces blend elements from various centuries and genres. Partington shares with Colossal that she has a “magpie” approach to collecting visual elements from her everyday experience, “equally taking inspiration from a visit to a museum or a walk along my local high street.” To create the works she first coil-builds the vessel, then shapes the object before adding press molded surface decorations and computer-generated enamel decoration over the glaze. I managed to finish one more project for the Chicago Show. This project is more or less a Historex conversion. The torso, head and hat, sword and sabretache are from Historex. The legs are as well, but they are from pieces designed for a soldier with leggings. I just added putty to the lower half to make into trousers. I changed the pose as well by spreading the legs and arching the upper torso to give a more animated casual pose.

This is a lovely Royal Doulton figurine dating to 1969. Her name is “Alexandra” (HN 2398), and she is hand-made and hand-painted. She is approx. 8” tall and 7” wide. She is in excellent vintage condition—no chips, cracks, or repairs. She would make a beautiful gift! “Royal Doulton fine china figurines have always been made of first-quality bone china. This three-material blend includes china clay, Cornish stone, and calcined bone ash. The resulting material has both strength and translucence. “Royal Doulton figurines have enjoyed enduring appeal. The following four factors continue to make these classic figurines popular in the 21st century. First, excited figurine buyers are still snapping up figurines that depict famous cultural and historic characters. Second, the figurines showcase contemporary styles and fashions. Third, well-known artists often design (and sign) these sought-after works. Finally, the British royal family’s endorsement carries considerable weight with the buying public.” Source: https://www.truelegacyhomes.com/royal-doulton-figurines/
