Some of the earliest photos of Victorian women have come to light in a revealing album of prints from the pioneering days of photography. The set of pictures taken by Lady Clementina Hawarden, one of Britain's first female photographers, is set to fetch £150,000 at auction.
Live Science looks back at 19 historical photos, shot between the 1820s and 1860s, that may make you look at history, and the world, just a little bit differently.
Jean-Francois Portaels "The Yellow Butterfly" In the mid-1860s, rosette belts became fashionable. During the '50s, the waistlines tended to be dropped and pointed in the center. Thus, belts didn't work very well with those styles. But by the mid-60s, waistlines had risen and straightened out and belts were once again in style! It's fun to see the various types of rosette belts that were created. Some were of a solid contrasting color to the dress. Some were of the dress fabric itself. And some were quite fancy - being adorned with stripes, edging, buttons or even stars! It's been fun to make rosette belts for myself and my family. I'm always amazed at how a simple dress can become really sharp looking with just the addition of a nice rosette belt! I've even had fun using my rosette belts for my modern outfits too. This are a few of my favorite 1860s outfits that include the original belt. The on-going quest for visibility has been the bane of women of colour for centuries, a feat held back by revisionist history, eurocentrism and racism. In Britain, where the art of paving over...
Children’s clothing evolved as time went by during the Victorian era. Many of these styles mirrored the adult styles of the day to some extent. Small girls wore crinoline petticoats like their mothers. There was a significant difference between the clothes worn by girls and their mothers. The length of the skirts worn by little girls was short than their mothers. Around the age of 16 a girls skirt would be full length down to the ankles just like their mothers. In fact, by this time the well to do young ladies would be dressing in the same fashion as adults. Until the late 1800’s girls were still wearing corsets. Below is a collection of 37 vintage portraits of beautiful teenage girls from the Victorian era.
Like clothes or other fashion styles from the second half of 19th century, women's hats in this era were also very uncomfortable, and most were awful. Just only few look good. Check out these photos to see how awful they were.

Lady Clementina Hawarden (1 June 1822-19 January 1865) was a noted portrait photographer of the 1860s. Hawarden first began to experiment with photography in 1857, taking stereoscopic landscape photographs before moving to large-format, stand-alone portraits of her daughters. Much of Hawarden's life remains a mystery to us. It is doubtful that she kept a diary

Of all the devices aimed at the retraint of womanhood the cage crinoline is the most elaborate. The huge crinoline served to extentuate the constrained waist, keep men at arm's length and give shelter from the elements to children and pets.
