Cokie Roberts' new children's book tells the stories of women who contributed to the success of the American Revolution — women like Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. She tells NPR's Steve Inskeep, "These were very, very politically passionate women. ... They were utterly devoted to the patriot cause."
These eight great video worksheets cover key leaders and political events of the Civil War. My students enjoy and are engaged by these simple to use four minute video worksheets. Most importantly, they helped increase student knowledge and understanding of the Civil War. Each video worksheet works great as a “Do Now Activity” or as a complement to any lecture or lesson plan on the Civil War. Each worksheet guides students through problems faced by Civil War soldiers or through a key Civil War event. The videos are great for visual learners and helps break up class time so students are more focused throughout the entire period. This activity is very easy to use. All you have to do is hand out or send the worksheets to the students and play the videos from the following website below. The videos are from the American Battlefield Trust Organization. https://www.battlefields.org/learn/videos Students watch the videos and answer the questions on the worksheets. Each worksheet includes 6-10 questions and has an answer sheet for the teacher. I recommend pausing the video at times to allow students to reflect and answer questions. The worksheets can be used to generate classroom discussion or be used as homework. You can use the worksheets individually or all at once during a class period. I recommend breaking the video worksheets up over the course of your Civil War unit. Feel free to modify this assignment as needed for your classes. How and why have historians' interpretations of the infamous Tammany Hall changed in recent times? Despite decades of portraying this New York City government as corrupt and immoral, historical interpretations of Tammany have been more positive lately. Students will consider multiple sources on the topic, create their own positive political cartoon of Tammany Hall, and think about how contextual influences impact historians and their interpretation of history. Throughout the lesson students will be prompted to: 1) Respond to a "Bell Ringer" that asks students to think about what qualities they would like a local politician to possess. 2) Watch a portion of a video clip about the infamous Kwame Kilpatrick, the former mayor of Detroit, and consider how history will remember him in the near future and distant future. 3) Acquire background knowledge of Tammany Hall and how historians/scholars portrayed Tammany negatively through a reading. 4) Analyze a cartoon created by Thomas Nast regarding the "Tammany Ring" and discuss the intentions of the cartoonist and other features of the cartoon. 5) Investigate recent scholarly interpretations of Tammany and distinguish between the positive and negative outlooks/evidence on the political machine. 6) Create a "positive" political cartoon on Tammany Hall, demonstrating the positive trajectory of recent historians' interpretations of the political machine. 7) Think about why recent scholars are interpreting Tammany in this manner, considering current contextual influences like feelings towards immigration today. 8) Finish with an exit ticket that asks students to write about how and why have these interpretations of Tammany changed over time. This activity is student-centered and Common Core! First, students read a brief history of the famous Mauryan leader of Ancient India, Ashoka (Asoka) the Great. Then, they analyze some of his more controversial accomplishments and evaluate his "greatness". Next, students formulate an opinion and use his accomplishments as evidence to support their beliefs. They create a conclusion and even draw parallels between his accomplishments and what makes a person great. This assignment includes a few primary sources embedded in the secondary source text. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ❤️❤️❤️ LOOKING FOR MORE STELLAR RESOURCES TO TEACH ANCIENT INDIA LIKE A SEASONED PRO? Student council elections are part of middle school. As a teacher I used to dread holding them in my classroom, until the year that most of my class ran. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but by having so many candidates I actually had to enforce 'campaign rules'. Students also had to take their campaign seriously. Standing up and promising to make recess longer was not a campaign promise that anyone in the room was going to fall for, because everyone in the room was running. Here are the tips that changed the way I ran student council elections. Encourage many students to run in your student council election The more students who run the less of a popularity contest it becomes. Students have to listen to multiple view points and begin taking their vote more seriously. It also means that students who lose the election will be in the majority. This helps ease the pain for students who don’t win. Give each student multiple votes This works best if your class has more than one representative on student council. By having more than one vote, students get away from voting for their friends. By having multiple votes students are
