Growing up in Coney Island, Arlene Gottfried was witness to plenty of odd scenes. It’s no surprise, then, that her new book of gritty, black-and-white photographs, “Sometimes Overwhelming,” charts a path through the wacky, wild and just plain weird characters that New York City attracts.

Will you be the kind to shout at the youths or to lovingly bake a pie for your precious grandchildren?
With a raise of hands who is feeling the signs of aging?? I swear every time I look in the mirror I see more gray hairs popping up! This getting old business is for the birds! I am not a fan! Who's with me?! I wish I could boycott getting old, but apparently it
I am an imperfect person loved by a perfect God. My only hope is in the perfect merit of Christ. He became my perfection and He is the only way into Heaven. My favorite season is Autumn🍁🍂🪔 favorite disney character Belle🥀🌹 True beauty comes from within Ultimately, it really doesn't matter how good looking someone is, it's what's in their heart that will make a lasting impression. Belle sees right through the exterior to the intentions of people, and forms her bonds based on the kindness they show, not by how attractive they are.

GET OFF MY LAWN!
Do you ever think about life as an older woman? (Note: I didn't say "old lady"!) As my mom ages, and continues to look great and be fit, I've been thinking about how definitions of age are really changing, and how I want to be just as fit at 73 as I am at 33. And, I'd love to look like this...
You have to understand... We were at Crater Lake on July 8 - and the park had really only been wide open for a few days. There was still a lot of snow and it is still considered VERY EARLY in the season up there. We hiked down to Cleetwood Cove, where they run the boat tours of the lake. The catch was that the boat tours weren't running yet. They apparently have to do a number of things from a certification standpoint at the beginning of the season so no boat rides. My folks, my wife and I were down on the docks - and some folks from Iowa City came down with their two sons - probably aged 10 and 8. The two kids wanted to jump in the lake - they'd been in the lake at Yellowstone and at Jenny Lake in the Tetons. It was a thing with them. But - and that's a big but - Crater Lake is COLD. That water is mostly rain (66 inches a year) and snowmelt (44 feet a year). The elevation at the lake is over 6,000 feet above sea level. Everything about the place is cold and crisp (except for the views which are hot, hot, hot). In the end, the kids walked in from the shoreline. My wife and my dad are both "theatre" people (aka actors/directors). My mom and I are both techies - backstage people - out of the limelight kinda folks. You can guess from that description who decided to take the kids action one step further. My wife was first. She removed _some_ of her clothes, sucked it up and jumped in. I captured the whole thing marvelously in a sequence of shots that shall remain far from the Internets. She lasted two or three minutes before the cold started to get to her but she was a trooper. My dad... well like I said - he's an actor - he doesn't shy away from "immersing" himself - in a role. And before you could say Dustin Hoffman he was on his way in. He's on fewer hit lists then my wife so you get to see his picture from the point of no return. I'm glad to say he also lasted a few minutes before hypothermia set in and we had to get the helicopter rescue. J/K. He did great. Mom and I remained perfectly dry - and warm. My note: I replaced this image on November 7, 2007 with a much better color-corrected image.
