Have you ever told someone to "shut the lights"?
I have to confess I wasn't going to make a slideshow this year...I usually make one but I have been so busy getting everything else ready and I didn't feel my picture taking this year was as good as years past. But then I was talking with a parent this morning and she talked me into it. So, I was putting all my pictures into an iPhoto album which is SUPER easy to turn into a slideshow....and I realized I needed an ending. While I was blog stalking a few months ago I found THIS super cute Mother's Day idea from Sandy at Soaring Through Second Grade and it hit me! I could re-do this but change it to what they want to be when they grow up! Here is my set-up! And here's what it really looks like without the magical special effects of the Camera + app! The font is Howser by Kevin and Amanda. I also downloaded the Big Words app for on my iPad for 99 cents and we were ready to go! Here are a few of the final products! If you're wondering why these two appear on the blog quite a bit it's because they are teacher kids and I have permission to use their photos exclusively on the blog : ) We had quite a few future teachers!! After I took them, I just dropped the picture into the iPhoto album with all our other pictures and the slideshow is complete! It was a very easy and great way to end our slideshow!!
Students draw a picture and write about what they want to be when they grow up and why. There is an adorable book by Al Yankovic called "When I Grow Up" that I like to read before students complete the activity. It's a great text-to-self connection activity that aligns with the Common Core.
This is a sign to display in between photos of students holding a sign saying 'what they want to be when they grow up'...
Don't be too freaked out when we get it right.
Wanting to capitalize on the interest in possible future careers, brought on by our visit to the Museum of the Rockies, I was delighted to find our library had a copy of Jo S. Kittinger's When I Grow Up. I was slightly less delighted, that it was the Spanish language version, Cuando Sea Grande. But, luckily for me, it's a Rookie Reader, which is about right for my Spanish language skills. And, the pictures are simple, and clear, so I was able to translate it into English, as I read it to the children. I also printed, and cut out, a number of paper doll people, and career type outfits, from Making Friends, which I scattered on the table, for the children to sort out, and glue together. Just for fun I threw in a couple, that weren't necessarily career uniforms, like a princess dress. When the older children objected to "princess" as a career option, I threw a lab coat over the dress, and suggested she was a Renaissance Fair coordinator, on the weekends, and an X-ray technician during the week. Who we are, isn't always what we do. And, since people tend to switch careers from time to time, I picked six of the dressed, paper dolls, and glued them down to a card stock circle (about dinner plate size). Then, I used a paper fastener to loosely, attach a smaller circle (the size of a small saucer) in the middle... ...to which I glued cut out pictures of the children's faces (and, now you see why we left the paper dolls bald). They can turn the circles, and see themselves, and their siblings change careers, at will. If only it were that easy in real life! It's great to be a homeschooler.
Growing up, we all cringed when adults tried to speak like us kids. It’s the same sad, weird feeling we get now when we hear some new slang term that just doesn’t make sense to us. Aging is totally a thing and our vocabulary ages with us. One day your grandchildren will come to you and ask what “LOL” means — that’s just how time works. Language is a beautiful thing that constantly evolves and changes over time. Do you still say groovy? How about “as if”? There’s no doubt that the words we use are a result of the time in which we grew up. Sometimes, we just don’t know the newest slang, and it can become glaringly apparent how old you are. Or at least how old you speak. Do you talk your age? Are you trying to be more youthful or sound more grown-up? We’re going to reveal your true age based on how you use words. Ready? Set? Let’s get going!
The South and the Northeast have very different fast food choices, while the Midwest and the West Coast partake is very different activities on their days off from work.

Childhood is a transitory period of tremendous growth and development that leaves behind a tapestry of treasured memories. As children grow, they provide a variety of pleasant and sad experiences. Each stage of their development is fleeting, giving way to the next and it’s critical to grasp these moments, cherishing them before they slip away. […]
