I love shuttle tatting. I actually prefer shuttle tatting to needle tatting. Shuttle tatting is a little harder than tatting with a needle. Since I've already done a needle tatting post I decided to do a post about shuttle tatting for beginners. Tatting is a beautiful old-fashioned art and it has been around for centuries.

This is the Pearl Cross by Dianna Stevens. You can find it in her book "Tatterly's Delight". I didn't add any beads to it, I just love it the way it is. It is such a nice little pattern. I used Lizbeth Size 20 thread, variegated on the shuttle and white for the ball thread. This is my motif # 8 the second time around. Dianna's website has been down for a few years now but you can still access it through the web archive. Here is the link for the pattern: http://web.archive.org/web/20080615054318/www.domesticarts.com/Patterns/pearlcross.html
I made this ornament years ago, and I honestly can't remember if this is a pattern I came up with, or if I got it from somewhere else. Does this look familiar to anyone?

Celebrating 20 Years of Couture Tatting!
On Saturday I bunked work and went to the Cape Lace Guild's exhibition. Alongside the more traditional lace was this piece, based on a cross-section of a plant stem: A piece of what was described as 'modern' lace, which has a decidedly vintage "mid-century mod" look about it: These pieces are made with sewing thread; they're so finely worked that they seem to have been made with variegated thread. But these are solid colours. There was some lovely tatting on display too: There are more photos on my Flickr page. I hauled out some old craft books and scoured the internet for tatting instructions, being pretty sure that somebody would have come up with a way to do it without a tatting shuttle (it was Saturday evening, and I wanted to do this now). Turns out you can tat with a bit of card for a shuttle, and it's really easy. Really easy, that is, once you give up on illustrated instructions and head for YouTube. There seems to be some sort of conspiracy going on with the illustrations. They make no sense, but have been drawn the same way for decades. The tatting elite seem to want to force you to learn from a real person, instead of a book. I will remedy this as soon as I have time: bad craft illustrations annoy me. All you need are a few slightly longer twisty arrows, people.
Cozy Hearts Tatting pattern (2 versions) This digital instant download contains pattern for making “Cozy Hearts” in 2 versions. This pattern contains 1 file with 5 pages (including a cover page) in total. All designs include clear diagrams with written instructions in English. Tatting level: late beginner - intermediate level (2 shuttles) The pattern “Cozy Hearts” does not contain basic tatting instructions, so you need some tatting experience to follow the diagram. You will need the following tatting skills to complete the motif: - rings - chains - split rings - Josephine knots - SCMR (Self Closing Mock Ring) Material for work: - threads (any size between 20 - 100) - 2 shuttles - crochet hook for picot joins Cozy Heart dimension: Olympus #40 - 9 x 7 cm Butterfly #40 - 8 x 6.5 cm Anchor #20 - 10.2 x 8 cm Lizbeth #20 - 3.5 x 1.5 inches Ette #60 - 6 x 4 cm Cozy Tiny heart dimension: Butterfly #40 - 4 x 3 cm Sanbest 3 strands metallic thread - 4 x 3cm Anchor #20 - 5 x 4.2 cm Lizbeth #20 - 2 x 1.5 inches Ette #60 - 3 x 2 cm You can use the motif for earrings, pendants, notebook cover decorations, card decorations, Christmas tree ornaments, brooches, etc. You may sell or give away your work that you make using this pattern, but distributing the pattern itself anywhere is prohibited. Please note that I don’t except returns or exchanges on digital products. NOTE FOR DOWNLOADING THE PDF: I’ve received quite a lot of messages asking how to download the PDF after purchasing. 1) no matter you are purchasing from ETSY through your mobile or computer, once you are done for the payment, ETSY will send you an email for the purchase receipt and download link directly. Please note that they will only send to the email that you registered in Etsy. 2) However, ETSY only allow you to see the DOWNLOAD LINK in laptop/tablet/computer. That means, you can’t see the link in your MOBILE. 3) Just simply click the “DOWNLOAD” button on your purchased list in ETSY account. 4) Open your downloaded file in your device, and print it ! That’s it. It’s very easy to do all these steps if you are using laptop/tablet/computer. (MOBILE DOES NOT WORK FOR DOWNLOADING FILES in ETSY) Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions about tatting and the pattern.
This Pattern is free on Muskaan's TIPS blog, and I love it! I only changed two things, I just added a picot on top chain of petal, to add her roll tatting too (this part fun). Petal little tricky but once I got it it took very little time to finish. I thought I would show construction pictures. pulling the front center flower part through, and adding the greenery I flipped the extra thread and kept encapsulating back up. Cut off ends and sewed the encapsulating thread into secure this one thread. The second thing I did different was the buds were made with clunies instead I loved making this and it was easier than thought, I will make more, thanks Muskaan :)
I made a new pattern called Candy Heart. It's available in my Etsy shop (if you want to check it out you can do so by clicking HERE) The hearts pictured above are tatted in size 80 DMC Special Dentelles, color #210 and color #603. The pattern contains two versions: Candy Heart (pictured on the left) and Candy Heart with Border (pictured on the right). I also made a few in Liz Metallic thread (colors are Rose on the left and Raspberry Pink on the right): The construction is similar to my Classic Heart tatting pattern, but I think the Candy Heart is quicker and easier to make. The only advanced technique is a self closing mock ring at the bottom of the heart. Other than that, it's just rings, chains, picots, regular joins, and lock joins. I've actually been enjoying tatting this pattern, and made samples in DMC size 80, Lizbeth size 20, and Liz Metallic. I may tat a few more over the coming weeks: One thing to note about this pattern: the Candy Heart (above left) is designed to lay flat with minimal to no blocking. However, the Candy Heart with Border (above right) is designed to cup after closing Round 1: This is done intentionally, to prevent ruffling after Round 2 is added. As you add Round 2, the design will flatten out, which you can see in the photo below. This sample is tatted in Lizbeth size 20, color #127 Butterfly Breeze: If you are curious, here is a photo of the ruffling that would occur if Round 1 is tatted flat: Anyhow, all of this is mentioned on page 7 of the Etsy pattern, but I just wanted to go into a more detailed explanation here in case it would be helpful.
Well, a dragon, anyway. I really, really, really wanted to go to Tat Days this year. My parents live in Atlanta, so it would have been extremely convenient for me to get to Toccoa, and I so want to meet all of my online friends. However, it is not to be; my sister has this little graduation thingy that weekend, so I'll be in LA instead. She's going to be a CRNA-- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. I think most people have some idea of how hard it is to become a nurse at all, so you can imagine how grueling it is to achieve an advance practice nursing degree. Her graduation card will therefore feature this triumphantly soaring dragon. The pattern is by Anne Bruvold. I used Jane's Hand Wound Thread technique to achieve a very subtle shading. The threads are DMC size 80 color 701 (Christmas Green) and Sulky Blendables color 4021 (True Teal). I also added a few beads to the pattern. The seed beads are size 11 Delica in silver gray. I'm not sure if the eye beads have a specific name; they're just a good quality round glass bead that I got from a local bead shop, and they make great eyes for all sorts of critters. I still need to figure out what else to put on the card; I can't have the poor dragon soaring through empty space! I'm pretty sure there are going to be mountains against the horizon, which I will make with colored papers. But there's got to be some other scenery as well, and it would be nice if some of it could be tatted. I'd love to do scene with a dragon and a lake and some trees, but that won't fit on a card; it will have to wait until I have a larger canvas to work with. Meanwhile, I'm open to suggestions. I'm also undecided as to whether or not the dragon should be breathing fire. Finally, I need to thank everyone who has offered me sympathy for the loss of my beloved cat, and to apologize to everyone who has tried to communicate with me and not gotten an answer. Life is slowly returning to normal, and I'm trying to get caught up with everything, including The Thread Exchange and my blog reading.

"Time & Again" tatted earrings "Campfire" because the warm and smoky colors combined with sunset colors remind me of a campfire at twilight. Just listed in my Etsy shop! The red and blue colors from the previous dye batch arranged themselves nicely in these "Time & Again" earrings from the pattern in my book "Marilee's Beaded Tatting Finery". The blue earrings are also from a pattern in that book. "Melange" tatted earrings This handsome guy winding skeins and standing at my display is my dear husband, Jan. His new venture is assisting me with skein winding and twisting, as well as printing off shipping labels. He prepared nearly all the skeins in the Campfire batch for me to dye. I expect that hand dyed thread batches will be listed in my shop more frequently, now that I have an assistant :)

The years passed quickly. I’m still surprised how long the shuttles lay quiet in the drawer. There were some tatting accomplishments along the way which were unreported. This post rewinds to show the final destination for the ‘Edge Without a Cause’. The edging found a home on my great niece’s christening/baptism gown. It was a beautiful time for our family. The edge was temporarily affixed to the gown. My DSL wants to create a different gown with hand made lace throughout. I hope y’all have a great day.
