Finished piano quilt top for teacher.
This quilt is easy to put together - just pay attention to color placement. Try this throw quilt pattern out for yourself and you'll see!
Thank you for all your kinds wishes and prayers for my mom and our family! Thankfully, her oncologist here okayed her and started her back on a "heavier" chemo last week. We will know how this drug is working in two weeks when she has more testing done. While we are waiting...Life keeps going on. As it should. And I am thankful for all the things that keep me busy. Keep me going. Our oldest son, Jon, is getting married at the end of June. What do you do when you love to piece and quilt and your child gets married? Make the happy couple a quilt. Which means playing with beautiful fabric, trying out a new toy and sewing. Happy therapy! Seafoam Symphony Jon's fiancé, Rebecca, and I sat down one night and looked at paint palettes online at Design seeds to get an idea of colors. I then went to the Kona website to match solids. Then I began searching online for fabrics from my favorite designers to translate our idea into fabric. What I have pinned at Pinterest found a perfect match in Pat Bravo's line Poetica. Unfortunately, no one around here carries it and it's out of stock in most places online. Kaffe Fassett's Collective Fall 2013's line had similar colors, but with an intensity my son liked better. I was able to find the lavenders, blues and greens in a roll at a shop in Indy. These are so nice to work with! Soft and silky....yum! Just a few of the prints in the roll! They also liked the Double Wedding Ring pattern and I was so excited when my Quick Curve Ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful and the pattern for Metro Rings arrived! Here is Jenny Pedigo's finished version. She is such an awesome designer and quilter! Thankfully, she has tutorials on YouTube for helpful hints and how-to's for the ruler. After a hideous, scrappy trial run that didn't involve the Kaffe's (thank goodness I practiced with scraps first), I settled on this design. Interlocking rings of just two colors. The greens for one ring and the blues/purples for the other. Here is my inspiration. Pinterest Using the greens from the Kaffe Fassett collection and some complimentary stash fabrics, I managed to get all forty-eight green "arcs" cut this week. They need a slight trimming after a confab with Dawn from The Quilt Shoppe. Exciting news from her! She's featured over at Moda Bake Shop with an original pattern called "Finding the 4 Patches". And, coming soon, a quilt she designed will be featured in a quilting magazine! So excited for her and love watching her designs go out into the world! She had the quilt at the store and it is so happy and cheerful! I want to make one now too! I also saw the quilt for the magazine. There is just something so cool about knowing this quilt is headed where it is. Seeing it before the world does. Goofy, I know. But very cool. Like a secret you just can't wait for others to know. One of my goals this year is to look in the WIP pile for flimsies and unfinished projects to work on. In April of 2010, I started "free-piecing" with scraps. Anytime I go to a quilt shop, I ask if they have a scrap or cast off basket. You can usually scam great pieces of beautiful, fun, happy fabric to play with without buying yardage. That way, you get to try out all the new lines or just pick your faves instead of getting stuck with patterns and colors you discover you really don't like. I have commitment issues. There are scraps from all over the United States in here since some were sent to me by other bloggers as scrap packs or were gifts from bloggy friends. I sewed some of my favorite scraps together, then squared them to 6" and sashed them with 1 1/2" strips of more scraps. I added a block here and there as I went along. There are seventy-two blocks and it's a nice twin bed size-ish. It's like an I Spy Quilt for fabric addicts! Moda, Kaffe Fassett, Joann's, Sandy Henderson, vintage... I'm so glad basting on the wall is easy and quick and I don't dread this part of the process anymore. It took a week of quilting in between all kinds of stuff that kept me busy to get this bad boy finished. I started sewing the back of the binding on last night while waiting for Ben at soccer practice. Ahhhhhh! Another WIP off the pile. That makes two for this year! Linking up with the gang again this week i have to say quilt story freshly pieced my quilt infatuation and sew many ways and you can keep track of me here
Progress pic of the blue crazy quilt. It has a random tab detail made from a coordinating Echino print. I'm planning to trim it out in a wide (mayb e14-18"), solid border. I hope to hand quilt this one.

Seeing as the 2 pieces shown in this post are called "Boro Blues" and "Boro Blues #2", let me start off by singing my own blues to you, over the poor quality of natural light which has been hanging around the last few days, (actually it seems like the whole month has been one long cloud). The quality of these photos is not what they should be, so my apologies. To make matters worse, the two quilts shown were photographed in different spots and at different times of the day, (I was trying in vain to go to where the most light was, sort of like my little dog Ellie, who seems utterly lost without a patch of sunshine to lay in). Okay, now about the quilts... most of you know that I am very interested in Japanese Boro, and sometimes use it as a stepping stone for inspiration. The two works here were inspired by the the heavily patched and often erractic and eccentric stitching found in some boro pieces, similar to this absolutely amazing and authentic boro futon cover which you can see here. (How I wish it were mine!) I went back into my scrap bag to make these quilts, and experimented with two different approaches to see what would result... For "Boro Blues" (shown directly above) I started by piecing a background panel, then added various patches whose edges are turned under and appliqued on with a small zig-zag stitch. The machine quilting is done in various stages as the patches were added on, so some quilted lines go over the patches, while others go under. Details of this piece can be seen in the photo above and below, (click to see a bigger image). For "Boro Blues #2" (see below) I experimented with a different approach... I began with a piece of fabric the size of the finished work, and began laying raw edge patches over the surface, zig-zag stitching them in place. I'd do a layer of patches, add some quilting, do another layer of patches, and add some more quilting. This resulted in a piece with a bit more weight to it, and with a more ragged look. (By the way, "boro" means ragged!) If interested, both pieces are currently available in my shop. (Update: Both pieces have now been Sold) Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Today is July 6, 2018 and I am taking a trip down memory lane. These are quilts that I quilted for clients in 2012. Some of them I don't even remember and some I remember all to well. I hope you enjoy looking at them. I have just discovered that I haven't really posted any quilts for 2018. I'll change that is a day or so. I spent an hour taking out 15 minutes of stitching. Quilt by Beth. She is giving this to some lucky person for Christmas. Sorry the pictures are not very good the lighting today is terrible. I think it is the best one yet!!! I used a new pantograph to quilt this. Very happy with the entire project. I tried using Glide thread in the top and the Glide magnaglide bobbin for the back. I am very pleased with the results and the thread. This thread is available from Bobbin Central.com October 11, 2011 It was difficult, but, this Clemson fan was able to quilt this top. This is one of the promised graduation quilts. This is Shelby's Whole Cloth. It turned out beautifully. You can see more about this quilted bedspread here. This top turned out perfect, by my standards. The pantograph that I used was 'Koi', not an easy one to hand guide. The texture on the top will really reflect light beautifully and Beth intends to hang this on a wall over a bed. Should be beautiful. Quilt completed for Jo's little boy. The fabric has cars on it and I was able to match those with the quilting that I did. Looks great!! T-shirt quilt finished for Carson. I really like the way that this turned out. Beth's Mayan Garden This is the original Mystery for Spring 2011 that was written by Beth Karr. This one is much larger that the one we actually did for the weekend, but, just as pretty. This is Preston's Memory Quilt. I used the puzzle pantograph for the quilting pattern. Red/Black thread was used. Turned out really pretty. Beautiful top done by Terry. Perfect piecing, flat and square. Great job Terry. This quilt will be given to a graduating senior at Epworth Childrens Home. It is very bright, but also very beautiful. Turned out just great!!! This is a Mystery Quilt that was done during Spring Fling 2011 Quilt Camp. It belongs to Mary Cross and is beautifully pieced. She chose a challenging pantograph-'Colors of the Wind' by Karen Thompson. The challenging part was that it takes 30 minutes to make one pass on the quilt. That said, IT IS BEAUTIFUL on this quilt. We used Orange thread--and it is perfect This quilt presented a challenge. The blocks are stitched onto a foundation, but, the borders are not. When I first received this top it waved like the American Flag on a windy day. I taked to the quiltmaker and she allowed me to make a few minor adjustments to the borders and now it is super flat. I just love it. Beth's Braid This is Beth's Original Small size Thing Spring Mystery Solved This is Judy's Think Spring Quilt Camp Mystery Solved This is Pat's mystery from Think Spring Quilt Camp. The inspiration...a drawing done by my youngest son when he was in 6th grade. (it hangs in my living room) The process...the inspiration was given to my sew connected buddies and they made the blocks for me. Aren't they fabulous!! The process was excruciating, crazy, frustrating and believe it or not, fun. I've never made a quilt this difficult...many, many set in seams. All of the blocks were different sizes (which is what I asked for!) I pressed/starched these blocks within an inch of their lives. It was more like sewing with blocks of wood than fabric, but they stayed straight. Thank goodness, because the seam ripper got LOTS of use in this one. You'll notice that the layout is different in the final top. My design wall was my saving grace for this quilt. I can't even tell you how many layouts I went through to achieve this. This is what a virtual quilting bee is all about for me...pushing me farther than I would go on my own. I can't thank my bee peeps enough. I learned so much. Exhilaration...I'm so proud of this, I can't even tell you. It almost makes me cry and I only made one of the blocks. I LOVE the negative space that is created by the blocks. The chocolate brown and aqua is my favorite color combination (I've been using so much brown lately). I love that Jon's drawing was the inspiration. I have one more block that will be the centerpiece of the back...the back is going to be soo cool...if I can pull it off. (Audrey, that's your block). I will tell you that I almost wimped out, sashed all the blocks the same size so I could easily put them together. I'm so glad, I struggled with this to make it like I had envisioned it. I'm wondering now how quilting will transform it. Remember, the neighborhood quilt auction for Haiti ends at 8 am tomorrow. Last chance to get your bid in...

Essentials #3 Hand dyed cottons, fused, machine quilted, mounted on painted wood panel. 11x14" $100 Email me. Sold Here's my working arrangement. I have all the fabrics I intend to use in front of me, in piles of similar colors. I compose the design on the teflon sheet, with a predetermined size, which is pretty important to how the design will be worked out. The batting is cut already so I can try out the design for size. Tweezers, scissors and rotary cutter, along with my marking tool, a sliver of soap, are at the ready. To my right is my iron, a cheapo Proctor Silex which I have been using for years. It has a Silverstone surface which helps with getting the fusible off easily, when I goof. On another table I have my painting area. I am using acrylic craft paint and I just got some enamels in black, red, yellow, white and royal blue. This yellow panel is painted with the new enamel paint. It has a touch more shine than the regular matte acrylics.

I just finished Maureen's Infinity quilt (pattern by Jacqueline de Jonge/Be Colourful)and it is gorgeous! Yes, I went a little over budget on the background fills around some of the stars, but it is okay - the effect was worth it. And a few close-ups: I definitely had a lot of fun with this one!
