It's hard to believe that almost a month has passed since my last post! July is always our busiest month of the year with two family birthd...
The name derives from Canzler and Hoffmann, the two founders of the firm who produced posable dolls since the end of the 1920s. After WWII one of the partners - Fritz Canzler - started with a new company in the West German town of Coburg, hence the new name CaCo after 1945. They still produce posable dolls today. This ad of 1951 must be from a transitional phase of the firm's history because it is still named with the old logo Caho and the new location in West Germany (Coburg) and the old one in East Germany, (Sonneberg). All dolls of 1951 are wrapped with a plastic foil instead of the former and later used cotton thread - sign of lacking material or just an experiment? My doll wears the same coat and skirt as the mother of the ad but her body is still wrapped in cotton. D.R.G.M. She is older, from before 1945, because the box shows the old patent number. This lady has a composition head and hat. The scale is rather unusual. In which doll's house should she live? Dolls with this costume are usually from the early post-war period. Even if the shoes seem a little too big, it's nice that she can stand alone. After 1951 Germany is divided and the firm splits up: Caco is the new firm in West-Germany, Caho stays in East-Germany. The iron curtain does not allow contact between the two firms . Each of them gradually changes the appearance of the posable dolls. In the mid-50s the dolls differ a lot as you can see for yourself on the photo above: on the left, the Caho model, smaller, different form of head, hands and feet and the body still wrapped in the plastic foil. On the right the Caco model with the body wrapped in cotton thread. Joachim Hoffmann, Spielzeugwerkstätten, Berlin SW 29, Hasenheide 32/38, firmieren werde Sammlung Ratingen This couple is from the mid-fifties - but made in East-Germany.They are still Caho dolls, the old pre-war label. Caho dolls of the Fifties Sammlung Ratingen Canzler & Hoffmann, Caho, Puppen und Spielzeug Fabrikation - Export Sonneberg i. The East-German Caho catalogue of 1953/54 offers a lot of other small dolls as well as dollshouse accessories. There are also about 80 different models of posable dolls: mothers, fathers, girls, boys, with and without wig, children in different sizes, nurse, teacher, cook, grandma, grandpa, gardener, negro girl and negro boy, page, FDJ boy, chauffeur, tractor driver, fireman etc. Canzler & Hoffmann in 1964 in a fair catalogue of Leipzig (East Germany) - announcing still the production of posable doll. Who exactly was manufacturing in Sonneberg until 1971? I really do not know. Vermutung: DDR Caho-Biegepuppen der späten1960er Guess: East-German Caho dolls of the late 1960s Sammlung Anna Setz Diese Puppen könnten die letzten Modelle der Caho-Biegepuppen gewesen sein, bevor auch dieser halbstaatliche Betrieb 1972 endgültig verstaatlicht wurde. Sammlung Katharina I suppose these are the last - sadly very ugly - models of the sixties before the end of the firm by nationalization in 1972. These ugly CaHo dolls show the end of the production in East-Germany. Neither Mr. Canzler, = Ca, nor Mr. Hoffmann, =Ho, were involved in their production. Mr. Canzler was successfully producing Caco dolls in West-Germany and the fate of Mr. Hoffmann in East-Germany is unknown. Nevertheless, someone was still making bendable dolls and these are the last models.
