When Edward Thomas's train stopped 'unwontedly' at Adlestrop station it became the inspiration for the most famous of his poems: ' Yes. I remember Adlestrop- / The name, because one afternoon / Of heat the exprss- train drew up there / Unwontedly' Though the station no longer exists the station sign is displayed in a shelter at the centre of the village. If this is not reason enough to visit Adlestrop, which is close to the Chipping Norton road near to Stow On The Wold, it's connections with Jane Austen must be of interest to visitors. The village itself surrounds a central green and is built of local Cotswold stone. Jane Austen is believed to have visited her mother's cousin Rev. Thomas Leigh three times between 1794 and 1806, she stayed at Adlestrop house the then rectory and would have worshiped at the local church. St Mary Magdalene is cruciform with an embattled west tower and despite several restorations retains much of it's beauty and is complimented by it's picturesque surroundings. www.bwthornton.co.uk My theatre blog: stratford-upon-avon-theatre.blogspot.co.uk/
