During these three 1-1/2 hour live painting sessions, Maggie Siner will demonstrate different ways to approach painting drapery. Working from her studio in Virginia, Maggie will talk her way through the demos, discussing the implications of each approach, while making a new painting each week. “…the strokes of the hammer on the chisel have to be in time with your heartbeat or pulse.” Barbara Hepworth’s name is synonymous with smooth, monolithic forms resembling human bodies or careworn sea-lashed rocks. Today she is recognised as one of Britain’s foremost Modernist sculptors, part of a generation exploring post-war abstraction with a hard-won,...

When I first saw Lisa Kellner's work, I could not take my eyes off of it. These images are undoubtedly beautiful, but evoke an unsettling feeling for me. There are endless possibilities of what she could be representing in her work, but what I love most, is that I see something different every time I look at it. Made of silk, these very organic sculptures feel a bit threatening as they seem to grow out of spaces, spreading across walls and ceilings and overflowing onto the floor. "Rooted in the language of decay, erosion and disease, [her] work merges intricate microcosms with immense topographies. In all of [her] work there is an awareness of location (whether a centimeter wide area on the body or an aerial view of earth) that facilitates the exploration of place and its emotive aspects." (all images and the excerpt from her artist statement are taken from Lisa Kellner's official website)

Los Angeles based artist Soey Milk paints confident young women in boldly colored clothing inspired by the imagery of her Korean heritage. Featured here on our blog, her slightly amorous oil portraits are imbued with mystery and personal discovery. On October 1st at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, Milk explores her intimate world with a new series of paintings and drawings. In the tradition of previous exhibits, the series is titled in her native Korean "Pida (피다)", which translates to blossoming or becoming something else.
