This genuine 1911 print is a disbound page from the book "Stories from the Pentamerone” by Giambattista Basie, illustrated by Warwick Goble. The Cover and title page of the book are shown for authentication in the illustrations but are not included with the print. Goble is regarded as one of the greatest of the 'Golden Age' book illustrators from the Victorian/Edwardian era. Unusually for the time most of Goble’s prints are not tipped in but printed directly on the page even at this early 1911 date. The Pentamerone is a collection of folk tales from Italy and they are illustrated in the ‘fairytale’ style that was Goble’s forte. The picture itself measures c. 7 x 5 inches on a larger original page from the book with the original dust sheet displaying the caption. The caption for this print is: ‘Vardiello with the cloth’ This print is offered unmounted and will be sent in a sturdy cardboard backed envelope.
Overview. This selection of stories from the Italian Popular Tales by Thomas Crane provides a great introduction to the fabulously rich tradition of Italian folktales and fairy tales. You will find here the distinctively Italian versions of famous European fairy tales, such as Zelinda and the Monster, which is like Beauty and the Beast; The Fair Angiola, which is like Rapunzel; and The Three Goslings, which is a story like The Three Little Pigs, but with little geese whose adventures are much more satisfying (I think) than the traditional pigs-and-wolf story, and not just because the story features macaroni. In addition, you will find some marvelous stories that will be new to you, such as the weird and enchanting fairy tale of "Catherine and her Fate" or the story of the child Crivoliu, who started out his life as an accursed child but who ended up as the Pope of Rome. There's also a story about a rooster who wanted to become the Pope, but, alas, things do not turn out so well for the rooster as they do for Crivoliu! Language. Crane tells the fairy tales in modern literary prose, so it is not difficult reading. Story Length. These are almost all single-page stories with just a couple of stories that are two pages long. Navigation. You will find the table of contents below, and you can also use this link to see the story posts displayed on a single page: Italian Popular Tales. Published in 1951 by Italian publisher Edizioni Lampo, this Biancaneve e i sette nani "sticker" album contains 240 numbered spaces for the collectible multicolored cards (figurines) that were produced in this series. The cards were not self-adhesive and so a glue would be needed to apply them to the book. A total of 36 pages (including covers). Album size 24 x 33.8cm; card sizes 7.3 x 5.3cm. Front cover art by Corbella. 1951 album images via Museo Virtuale della Figurina. Original sticker envelopes from 1951 and 1962. ___ In 1962, it was reissued by Edizioni Lampo in Italy. It had a new cover illustration--the movie poster art of Bruno Napoli. Slightly smaller dimensions at 31 x 22cm. Then 1968 saw another modification to the Italian cover. Snow White and the Prince now looked more like Disneyland cast members than animated characters. The publisher "Edizioni Lampo" had changed their name to "Editrice Moderna". They would continue to print Disney stickers albums up until 1977 when Panini entered the field. Special thanks to Nunziante Valoroso for supplying valuable information and additional images for this post. The sticker album and cards were issued in other countries too. See some examples in the next Archive entry.
