English ivy (Hedera helix) has naturalized in many parts of lowland Cascadia. The tough, long-lived climbing plant grows well in the cool, damp forests along the coast. The densely foliated vine, capable of climbing trees to great heights, can crowd out much of the native vegetation. Because of English ivy's tendency to dominate the landscape, especially in disturbed locales, it is considered a noxious weed by many an ecologist, a pest that should be controlled and, if possible, eradicated. Invasive species such as this constitute a key forest management problem.
