The party for this Astrid costume; was last Wednesday and my sweet friend Amber did such a great job that I wanted to share it with all of you! You know how much I love a themed party! (see here and here and here haha!) Maybe it will give you a few ideas for throwing low budget parties-most of the decorations were made of cardboard. Not that you can even tell... Toothless's body used to be a box. Amber spray painted the outline and then added detail with acrylics. Would you believe his wings used to be a shower curtain?! Awesome:) Watch out for the dragon nest! Balloons, sharpie and fake moss:) I really love the viking ship she made too Its cardboard again! A large tv box spray painted gray with wooden dowels for the oars. The sail is just a piece of poster board with a fantastic dragon drawing-did I mention Amber is an excellent artist?? The food was all of course dragon and viking approved. We had 'fish scales' (pepperonis) because, you know, Dragons eat fish. Dragon berries(fruit salad), terrible terror eggs ( grape tomatoes) , dragon scales(cucumber) and 'talking fish bones (fish sticks)' because someone somewhere in the movie says that and the children think its hilarious. It was fun to listen to them all cracking up around the table while they read the little labels on everything We also had 'Gronkle eggs' (biscuit dough wrapped around a hot dog" The best part were these 'dragon lit torches' A cupcake cooked in a ice cream cone with some fiery icing. The dragon lighting them up is a homemade creation as well. Just a $1 dinosaur with some scrapbook wings hot-glued on! the kids also had a little bit of 'dragon training' Check out that Natterhead! What you don't know what that is!!??! Watch the movie!!

Bud loves Mike the Knight. He follows the exploits of the tiny knight and his friends in Glendragon closely and I knew we were expecting some toys and playsets, in addition to a helmet and sword just like Mike's in his birthday presents. I was determined to make his birthday cake this year and, when I asked him what kind of cake he wanted, I wasn't surprised when he requested a Mike the Knight cake. I googled lots but only saw very professional cakes so had to come up with my own idea. This was the finished result, read on for how I made it. Firstly, apologies for not having step-by-step photos. This is my first ever cake post and I didn't realise it would turn out so well and I would want to blog about it. I know next time! You will need: One Cake - Choose your own variety of cake, you could even...shhhh...buy one! I used the recipe for Mummy Mishaps' Raa Raa Cake as I loved the marble effect and I've been wanting to try one of her recipes for ages. I used Nutella to sandwich the three layers together. For Decoration: Chocolate Fondant Icing (I bought mine ready made from ASDA - their Chosen by You range - but you could make your own) 1x Pack of Ready to Roll Green Icing (I used Regalice) 3x Packs of Chocolate Finger Biscuits (I used Cadburys) A length of ribbon (1 metre is long enough, I bought Mike the Knight ribbon on eBay) Small Icing Flowers (again bought from ASDA's Home Baking range) Small toys If you wish to add a name you will need a contrasting colour of ready to roll icing (I used yellow) How to decorate it: Once you have your cake baked (or bought) and sandwiched together, place it on a cake board or stand. Use the chocolate fondant icing to cover your entire cake, top and sides. I used a palette knife to spread it out smoothly. Sprinkle icing sugar on your works urface and roll out your icing on to it then use your cake tin as a guide to cut a circle of icing for the top of your cake. Rub icing sugar onto a rolling pin then slide your icing circle onto the rolling pin. Use the rolling pin to position the icing circle on top of your cake. Lightly press on to it to ensure it is firmly in place. Next, take your chocolate fingers and place them side by side around the cake. When they are all in place cut a length of your ribbon to size and pin it in place at the back of the cake. Take your icing flowers and arrange them equally on either side of the top of the cake. Use small toys to decorate. These actually came from the Mike the Knight Magazine that is available in newsagents and supermarket. We got the finger puppets ages ago and the Galahad and flags were on last month's magazine. They were the perfect size for cake decorations. Finally, Roll out your contrasting icing colour on an icing sugared surface and cut out the letters of your child's name. These can be placed into the gap underneath the flowers. If you don't have alphabet cutters you could try doing it freehand or even piping using softer icing. I made up some icing using a little icing sugar mixed with water and used this to stick the letters on to the cake. I placed the birthday candles in the centre of the cake. I was really pleased with the design of my cake and it tasted great too (thanks to Jenny at Mummy Mishaps!) You could decorate it in any way really, perhaps using Octonauts toys and blue icing with white chocolate finger biscuits? Or using a similar colour scheme to make a Tree Fu Tom cake? Bud adored his cake and dragged everyone who arrived to see him on his birthday to see it, mostly before they even had chance to take their coats off!

Fire-Breathing Dragon Cake!!: I first saw this idea in a children's Magazine and decided to make it for my younger brother's 5th Knight-themed birthday party. With 2 ordinary 9 inch cakes, frosting, and a few other easy to find candies, you can create a very realistic dragon!
Keep the party moving while you wait for guests to arrive, transition between activities, and as you serve refreshments. A personalized knights and dragons themed coloring table runner is the secret to a stress-free party. At 4', 6', 8', or 10' long, you can be sure there's room for everyone. Kids love to collaborate and share their ideas. Coloring as a group helps even the shyest kids to feel comfortable. Runners are printed on heavy matte paper -- perfect for crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint... Kids love to use stickers and stamps on them as well! The design, personalization, and bright white finish make it as much a decoration as an activity. When the party is over, roll it up to continue coloring on another day, or fold it up for the recycle or compost bin. Be sure to take photos of the kids with their artwork to include in your birthday scrapbook! Product Details: • US customers can order as little as 5 days in advance of your event -- just let me know the date of your party. • Runners generally do not need to be secured to the table for indoor use. They come rolled design-side-out, so they lay nicely and won't curl back up. • If used outdoors, you'll want to secure your runner with tablecloth clips or tape. If you choose to use tape, know that you cannot remove it without damaging the finish on the paper. Do not try to remove tape. • Runners all measure 24" wide regardless of length. They look beautiful over a cloth tablecloth. • For messy applications, such as a cookie or cupcake decorating table, you'll LOVE having your runner over a disposable tablecloth. When the party is over, simply fold the runner, and the mess, into your tablecloth for the fastest cleanup ever. • The thickness of the paper makes it suitable for floor use as well. Sword And Shield This is a horrible picture - my fault for not taking a photo myself! Carved from a sheet cake. I've learned a lot...
Now it's time to show you how to make some easy light-weight wings to go with your clay horns! All you'll need other than typical supplies like scissors, pencils, and glue are two sheets of craft foam (three to be safe) and some thin elastic cord. Here's the foam I used: You can find this at any craft store - or even Wal-Mart, I believe - for less than a dollar a sheet. First sketch out your wing shape on the foam using chalk or a white pencil: It's not easy to erase marks off of the foam, so use something light and be careful with your lines. If you do need to erase something, try rubbing the foam with a Magic Eraser or a damp wash cloth. Once you're happy with your shape, cut it out: [Side note: cutting foam with scissors is my new favorite thing. I can't explain why, but it's ridiculously fun. Something about the smooth texture, I think. :D] Now use that wing as a template to trace the second one: To give them some rigidity and support, next we're going to cut out two top spines for each wing, for a total of four: You can see that I'd already sketched this shape into my original wing. To get the shape onto the foam I traced the top edge of the wing and then free-handed the lower edge, comparing it frequently to my wing to get the shape right. Just like with the wing, once I had the first spine cut out I used it as a template for the next three. Next sandwich your wings between the spines. I used plain white craft glue, but I'm sure hot glue or most other adhesives would work just as well, if not better. Weight your wing sandwich down with a heavy book or two and allow them to dry. Once your spines are dry it's time to add some smaller "finger" spines. I experimented with straight edges before realizing a curved line looked much more organic: All of these pieces came from the same two sheets of craft foam, by the way, so I'm just using scraps here to form the extra spines. Play around with the curves until it looks right to you, and then trace and cut the shapes so you have a total of four of each. Glue everything down and allow them to dry. Now it's time to join your wings together and attach the elastic bands that will allow you to wear them. (Woot!) First, check your wingspan by having someone hold the wings up behind you. Mine were a bit too wide/long, so I trimmed off about three inches from the interior edge on each wing. When you're happy with the wingspan, lay your wings down on a hard surface with the two interior edges butted together. Cut out a large square that will overlap the center of both wings from your scraps of craft foam, and slip it beneath the two wings. Trace the upper and lower curves of the wings onto your new square, and then trim it so no extra foam sticks out from beneath the wings. Ug, that was confusing, wasn't it? Sorry - I forget to take a process picture. Here it is finished to show you what I mean: That's my foam square on top - I used yet another scrap of craft foam for this piece, which is why it's a funky shape. This is the side that will be against your back, though, so don't worry about making it too pretty; it just needs to be functional. As you can see, my piece overlaps both wings. BEFORE YOU GLUE THE SQUARE DOWN, attach your elastic cords with staples. Make sure you staple through the cord, and not just around it like I did. (Mine would probably pull out if I yanked hard enough.) You can also add a dab of glue to the cords for extra strength. Once your cords are securely attached, go ahead and glue the center foam piece down over both wings. Weight it down and let it dry. Next, carefully flip your wings over and staple down the joined seam: Yes, a standard stapler *will* go through four layers of craft foam without any problem. :) To cover the seam and staples, glue down yet another strip of foam, wrapping it around the edges and securing it to the reverse side: This is the finished front side of the wings - or the side that goes against your back. And here's the finished back! TA-DA!! And you're done! To hide my elastic cords I fed them through two tiny holes in my costume's top - which required me to go back and add jewelry clasps to the cords so I can unclip them. Just use crimp clasps and lobster claws if you want to do the same thing. At this point you can add paint or glitter or gems to jazz up your wings, or just leave them as-is. Because I'm wearing mine at night I wanted to emphasize the spines a little more, so I added a shaded outline on the spine edges: I used a bright reddish-orange eyeliner for this, believe it or not - the creamy texture allowed me to smudge the line and fade it in a bit. (Sorry it doesn't photograph well; the orange really messes with my camera!) Here's the full wingspan with my shaded outline: I haven't shaded the backside of the wings because I'm lazy, and this is the only side that will be photographed, anyway. :) I hope you enjoyed, and that this inspires a bunch of dragon/fairy/bat/devil costumes out there! ***** Come see ALL of my craft projects on one page, right here!
