Jean-Étienne Liotard, Genf 1702 - 1789 Das Schokoladenmädchen / The Chocolate Girl (1743/45) Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden Nach seiner Ausbildung in Genf und Paris reiste Liotard nach Florenz, Rom und Neapel und verbrachte ab 1738 fünf Jahre in Konstantinopel, dem heutigen Istanbul, was ihm den Beinamen "peintre turc" einbrachte. Anschließend reiste er nach Wien, wo er die Kaiserin Maria Theresie und ihren Hof porträtierte, danach folgten Reisen nach Italien, Deutschland, Frankreich, England und die Niederlande. Ab 1758 lebte er bis zu seinem Tod in seiner Heimatstadt Genf, begab sich jedoch immer wieder auf kurze Reisen quer durch Europa. Liotard malte vor allem Porträts und gilt als einer der herausragenden Pastellmaler seiner Zeit.
Jean-Étienne Liotard, Genf 1702 - 1789 Prinzessin Karoline Luise von Hessen-Darmstadt, später verheiratete Markgräfin von Baden an der Staffelei - Princess Karoline Luise of Hesse-Darmstadt, later Margravine of Baden, at the easel (1745/46) 1745 lernte die damals 22jährige Prinzessin Karoline Louise von Hessen Darmstadt den aus Genf stammenden, bereits in ganz Europa bekannten Pastellmaler Jean-Étienne Liotard kennen. Sie konnte ihn überreden, ihr im heimischen Darmstadt für einige Wochen Malunterricht zu geben. Bei dieser Gelegenheit entstand dieses Pastellporträt auf Pergament, das die Prinzessin an der Staffelei zeigt. Karoline Luise war eine eifrige und geschickte Kunstsammlerin und ihr „Mahlerey Cabinett“ bildete den Grundstock der Staatlichen Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe.
