2018 Topic 10: Paper Dolls Kaz Hall Well hello and bonjour everyone, Darcy here. I have just returned from France to bring you our latest challenge. This one is fun and will take you back to your childhood play days. Do you remember cutting out paper dolls from magazines, or even creating your own? I definitely did, I went through a phase of drawing and colouring paper dolls, each with a different outfit. I had a box full and they went everywhere with me. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 9: Colour: Vintage Neutrals Colour Challenge... The winner is: Hazel Parr from Create a smile cards Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] There are many versions of paper dolls available now, you can find an abundance of downloadable dolls online but if you don't fancy the cutting out then the Tim Holtz die cuts are for you. They come in packets with over 100 pieces, enough to play for ages. These vintage images slot nicely into so many layouts, themes and colour schemes. These examples will show mostly this type of 'doll' but you can use any paper dolls that you have, or even create your own from stamped parts. The Lynne Perrella Collection has lots of heads to start you off. This example is very much a vintage collage of ephemera, beautiful neutrals combined with a little texture. Emma Williams More vintage dolls/people, this time on tags. The theme remains layered and distressed but it set off by the strong blue of the pieces of denim fabric. Katje Mezzanotte I love the use of the embroidery hoop framing this project, it really adds tot he traditional feel. Emma Williams Here the colour scheme is simple and elegant with a splash of vivid colour on the butterfly wings. Bobbi Smith As you can see the vintage dolls work equally well on a colourful background, these tags are stunning. Beautiful blending and inky edges pulls all the elements together. Barbarayaya More colour here, not just in the background but also on the figure which has had subtle colour added. Bexta A fun keepsake in a tiny tin, this little girls with her blushed cheeks fits perfectly inside this tin with her butterflies. Nichola Battilana Now for a piece that is full on 3d, there is so much to look at here, it is such an inspirational project. From the wheels, the bottles and the flowers tot he boy and the butterflies. I especially like that he stands out for not being coloured so brightly. The carefully placed words lead your eye around all the elements. Barbarayaya More 3d pieces, this time small houses, subtle tints combined with splashes of colour is the key. Annie Such a beautiful colour in this background, with lots of well thought out and placed elements of interest. Tracy Evans I had to include this piece as it is so sweet, all dolls need clothes and somebody has to wash them. This line of dresses has so many lovely little details, peer between the layers to pick them out. Nederhoff913 If you love the clothes of paper dolls then how about adding textured clothes to them, a little scarp of lace looks fabulous. Maygreen Fairies You could also collect petals and leaves and create some stunning fairy outfits. Artful Adventures These little origami dolls are wonderful check out the link under this photo to find a tutorial. Omiyage blogs Another way to join in is to use vintage photos of your own, such as old family photos. Here they are attached to cubes. Barbarayaya This next one could be so much fun, make these for family and friends, work colleagues or teachers. the templates are on Claudine Hellmuth's blog, find then HERE. Mendy You can also make your own dolls from blank templates, there are several templates on Kimberly Crick's site, once you have the body shape you can use rubber stamps and patterned papers to add character. The templates are free to download, check them out. Glue gun stencils have become my favorite thing to make, taking only minutes and giving a whizzy (new word?), quirky look. This idea is thanks to Traci Bautista and her newest book, "Printmaking Unleashed" published in 2014 by North Light Books. I must admit that I love her work and her books (previous fav is "Collage Unleashed"). Just as long as you make sure that all the lines are connected to another, they stay together and easily come off of parchment paper (Teflon sheet can be used also). The biggest one, the stripes, is 18" long and 12" tall so even big ones work. I didn't bother to flatten out most of them because the glue had already become firm (the glue is flat on the bottom but rounded on top), but if this is a problem, I'm sure I can wave a heat gun over the top to soften the glue and put a plexiglass sheet on top and press it down. Now to the actually using them as stencils!
Wooden craft store beads are easily transformed with these 5 DIY trendy transformations using dye, woodturning, paint and more.
Let me tell you had much fun I had making these. I seriously want to start up a scarf making business, hit the road and do shows selling them. I had to reel it back in because I might have too much going on to fit that in, but let's just say I was excited. These are FUN to make! The scarf body is knit, so it's super soft around your neck. Then it's time to clean out those scrap bins, anything goes...

2016 Topic 13: Paper Piecing Urtica Well hello everyone, Darcy here bringing you a brand new topic. For the next fortnight we will be exploring Paper Piecing. We will be encouraging you to paint and decorate papers to use, or even better use up all your old scraps. If you like jigsaws then you will love paper piecing, and the arrangements can be as simple or as complicated as you wish. First let's clear any confusion about what paper piecing actually is and how it differs from Foundation paper piecing, which is a fabric term. In fabric patchwork there are many patterns that require sharp, clean, crisp edges of fabric to be stitched together. In order to make this easy, there is a technique known as paper piecing, this has been around since the 1770's. Paper is cut, very accurately and then placed onto fabric and basted in place. The fabric is then folded around the paper and pressed. This gives the very sharp accurate edges to the fabric that are needed. Once the fabric pieces have been sewn together the paper templates from inside each piece can be removed. This is a fabric patchwork that has been made using the paper piecing technique inside the fabric to achieve those crisp lines and accurate points. SchenleyP Now for paper piecing as used in paper crafts. For this technique all you need is pretty paper, whether that be scrapbook paper or painted paper. Cut apart the paper and fit it back together, mixing shapes and patterns to create an image. Think of it as paper patchwork. Simple as that.. you can make it as intricate and as layered as you wish, but more of that later. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 12: Fabric Challenge... We had some really great entries, did you enjoy playing with fabric? it is certainly very different to paper, did you discover a new love? Fabric can take your crafting in a whole new direction or just take your existing repertoire to a new level. PaperArtsy Fresco paints work brilliantly on fabric, if you didn't get chance to join in with the challenge I hope you will try out fabric soon. The winner of Fabric is: Julie from The Created Page Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] Paper piecing can be lots of fun, this technique limits the need for intricate colouring in, though the cutting out can be time consuming.. of course this depends on your chosen image. Piecing can add lots of pattern, texture and interest. Diane Salter uses Gelli prints to great effect to create this elephant. The end project is just wonderful, so full of interest. Follow the link to her blog HERE for the whole process. These are ATC's, they show perfectly how simple paper piecing can be. Even though they use relatively few papers and patterns they are still fun and eye catching. You can see they utilise scrapbooking papers, but mainly just scraps. Memmu This card from Carol again shows how much impact can be achieved from a relatively simple design and just 2 patterns. This next example uses piece photographs instead of patterned papers. This could be a brilliant way to create a memory from holiday snaps. Gerren Lamson Note how the pieces are butted up to each other and they are of a similar weight/medium,style; this is where the technique varies from Collage. A collage usually comprises of pieces that are over lapping and built to form layers, also the pieces do not need to have anything in common. A paper pieced project will use similar weight papers only, whereas a collage utilises book text, fabric, scrapbook paper and all forms of ephemera. This technique can be used in scrapbook layouts, on cards and as mixed media projects, but size it up and you can cover furniture too. Bryonie Porter Or how about this utterly gorgeous paper pieced/patchwork wall, made with vintage wallpaper. Hen So now that we have seen lots of 'flat' projects, how about adding some dimension and creating layers with your 'piecing' When choosing your papers it is important to consider the patterns carefully. Take into account the size and repetition of the patterns, and how they will look on a small scale project. Keep your patterns small, and mix in some plain papers to add balance. You could paint your own papers and add a patterned stamp to create patterned paper. Here is another take on the technique, more patchwork than piecing, but still it uses very pretty papers to create this sampler. The folded edges here add lots of dimension and the buttons really add lots of interest. Leeann Pearce Here is another take on the subject, these are very much mixed media, but paper is involved. I love how they are joined. Donna Downey This one is a bit out there with regard to the technique, is it paper piecing? Well it is pieces of paper, so I guess so! maybe that is stretching the technique a little far, but I really like these tags and I thought you might like them too. Christine Paper piecing has been using in scrapbooking for a long time, it is a great way to add fun characters to a layout. There are thousands of patterns all over the Internet. Mostly they are characters like this snowman. See how each of the pieces has an inked edge, that is something to remember as it makes each piece pop and adds subtle dimension and shading. D . Anderson Traditionally, paper piecing only involves glue, but why not add stitching? there is nothing to stop you, it will add interest and dimension, go for it! Manuela A brilliantly simple way to use this technique would be to create a journal cover, like this one by Els; you could go crazy with colours and patterns. Now how to categorise this one, is it paper piecing? or altered art, some of the pieces are collaged, and it is definitely mixed media. Wherever it belongs it is a great idea and would be a great way to use up paper scraps. SheepBlue Finally let's look at how stamps can be used. This technique makes more out of your stamps, instead of plain images you can have instant colouring in and pattern, and each will be a little different. In this example Kalina has used a digi stamp, patterned papers and colouring in for the skin and shading. This is a great opportunity to take another look at your stamps, which ones will look good over patterned paper? Which ones have 'sections' making it easy to build up the image. This card from Jo Firth Young has utilised the technique and added great patterning to the flowers. Here is a short video from Ruth showing how to stamp and place your patterned, stamped pieces. One last example, I couldn't resist this pieced doggie, perhaps you could do this and create a pieced portrait of your own pet! Simon Hart Now we have seen lots of examples, what will you have a go at? freestyling your own images, using a pattern/template, stamping? There are so many ways to tackle this topic. If your thing is fabric then by all means have a go at the fabric foundation (paper piecing) technique. As collage, paper piecing and decoupage have many similarities and cross over areas it is perfectly reasonable to be able to use them all in your mixed media work. Don't forget to follow Darcy's and Leandra's pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! However you choose to interpret this topic I am really looking forward to seeing what you create over the next 2 weeks! Glamour Girl in Black Tube Hat My annual show opens at YT Galleria on Thurs., Oct. 2, with a reception from 4-8pm. There's usually wonderful food and the galleria also has wonderful clothing, new abstract paintings by Carol Johnson I'm entranced with. I decided on Wild Glamour as a title because I wanted to do more Glamour Girls that were beyond the styles I had tried, especially more with grass hair. I still have more to experiment with, but there are also more Pisces Women, and the unusual Green Woman and Woman Enveloped in Ferns that were produced in the midst of the coldest months of last winter. YT Galleria is in the East Hills section of Grand Rapids at 966 Cherry St., GR 49506; 616-451-8817; with lots of restaurants. Hope to see you there for the reception! I have been too tired lately to make my own bound books so i had a new idea of just using a thin molskine. The paper is thin and it gets a little wrinkly, but i don't mind that. I am trying to do one page a day which is also different for me, i use to collage a few pages at once and then go back and add other parts when i felt like it. But know it feels like a ritual and i like the feeling of finishing a page. I strive for everyday, but i probably end up with 4 or 5 days which is still good for me. I don't put too much thought ahead of time, i just start and its been a lot of fun, so here are a few of my first ones and i will probably be sharing here more often as a result of getting more pages finished. a couple of up close shots...
