Looking for some fun and unique summer crafts to do with the kiddos? Me too! School is almost over and I've got summer crafts on my mind! Today I'm sharing this fun twist on a God's Eye weaving craft. (Remember collecting sticks and making those in summer camp?) But, instead of making the traditional 2 stick version, we recently made a fun 3 stick version.... that also happens to look like a tiny baby turtle! (Aww, aren't they cute? My preschooler was in looove with these.) Weaving Cute Baby Turtles Using God's Eye Weaving Pattern This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure policy, click here. Usually I have a ton of related picture books to share.... but apparently we don't read very many turtle-themed books! (Know of any good ones?) The only ones that I can remember us reading (and liking) are the Franklin books. But, if you're looking for some great inspirational art books to get the creative juices flowing, here are Our current 20+ favorite art books: Colorful Dreamer The Iridescence of Birds Modern Art Adventures Mix it Up Press Here Any Ed Emberley Book The Day the Crayons Quit Beautiful Oops Dog's Colorful Day Too Much Glue Harold and the Purple Crayon Day with No Crayons Artist to Artist Artist Ted The House Baba Built A Blue Butterfly: A Story of Claude Monet Sandy's Circus A is for Art The Artful Parent This Bridge Will Not Be Grey Art Workshops for Children Ok. Let's get to weaving some baby turtles! Let's Weave Some Baby Turtles! First we painted 3 mini popsicle sticks with quick dry solid tempera paint. (I LOOOVE these paints because we can paint quickly and if the baby starts crying and we have to stop crafting... it's not a big deal. There's not much cleanup or setup needed!) Once our paint dried (ours dried in a couple of minutes) we drew on a face and some toes. Then, we hot glued the turtle together. Now we grabbed our colorful yarn and got weaving. First I tied on a piece of long yarn. (I made sure to leave a bit of excess yarn so that I could tie my last piece of yarn with my first piece of yarn at the end.) Then, we wrapped the yarn around our turtle (across the center), making sure to cover the middle portion. (I think I wrapped it around 2-3 times each time.) Ok. Then, we began weaving just like you would with a normal two stick God's eye pattern. We placed our yarn over a popsicle stick, wrapped it around once, and then placed our yarn over the next popsicle stick, and wrapped it around... and kept repeating that over and around process. And to change colors, we simply tied on another piece of yarn. Once we finished, we tied our last piece of yarn to our first piece of yarn. And that's it! I really hope you try this activity with your kiddos too. It's such a fun and easy craft that's sure to please kids of all ages. (When my 4 year old saw me making these, he immediately wanted to make some too. I got the first steps started for him, but he quickly caught onto the "over and around" weaving pattern!) And if you liked this activity, you can find more weaving crafts and more popsicle stick crafts on the blog! Let's Keep in Contact! When we travel with kids, regardless of our hotel choice and the amenities it provides, there are always a few occasions during our trip where we find ourselves looking for ways to entertain the kids inside the hotel room. One child might be having a nap, some family members might be showering or changing or you may just be up there for a bit of a rest and recharge before heading out again. These days, I always bring a little activity pack so they can be entertained. As you are travelling, the items you bring need to be light and not bulky. I only take things that can fit into one A4 size pencil case. The items that I take are generally open-ended which means that they can be used in more than one way and for more than one purpose. The materials that we use in our DIY Kids Hotel Activity Pack are: paper plates (x10) coloured paper-tape (washi tape) toy cars watercolour paint set/pens/markers plain paper notebook balloons rulers There are a number of different ways that you could use the items in this pack. Here are five different activity ideas. The rest of the ideas can come from the kids. Trust me, they'll have their own ideas. Activity 1. Paper plate tic-tac-toe (2 players) Materials: paper plates x 10 coloured paper tape marker (optional) Instructions: On the floor of your hotel room, lay down a tic-tac-tow grid using your paper tape. Make a large "X" on the back of five of the paper plates and a large "O" on the back of the other five (use your markers or tape for this). Players take turn putting their plates in the grid in an attempt to get 3 of their plates (either X or O) in a row. Activity 2. Tape roads Materials: coloured paper tape toy cars Instructions: Use the coloured paper tape (or masking tape) to make roads on the hotel room floor and drive your little cars around for some imaginary play. Activity 3. Paint what's out the window This view isn't too shabby. Materials: paper or paper plates to paint on watercolour set w/ brush (we use these as they are easy to pack, can be used anywhere, are easy to clean and don't stain) glass of water Instructions: Encourage your children to look outside your hotel room window and talk about the different features or objects that you see. They can paint or draw a picture. Don't forget to name and date the masterpiece as it can make a lovely momento of your holiday. Activity 4. Paper plate balloon tennis (2 players) Materials: paper plates (1 per player) plastic rulers (1 per player) coloured paper tape 1 x balloon Instructions: Use the paper-tape to stick your ruler to the back of a paper plate and blow up a balloon. Have fun hitting and catching your balloon with your paper-plate racket. Try some giant sized "egg-and-spoon" style races with them as well. Lots of fun to be had quickly and easily and balloons are much safer to use in hotel rooms over balls! Activity 5. Paint a Paper Plate Mask Materials: paper plates coloured paper tape ruler watercolour paint/markers Instructions: As well as making great rackets for balloon tennis, the same design can be used as a fun puppet or mask for children. Paint or draw on the extra details and then put on a puppet show. You may have noticed that I have recently been in Dubai! I was incredibly fortunate to be staying at the stunning Shangri La Hotel in Dubai as a guest of the hotel. What a luxury! The Shangri La Hotel Dubai is located just 15 minutes from the Dubai International Airport and a short taxi ride into the hub of Old Dubai. (You shouldn't pay more than $10AUD for a taxi there). With 8 different restaurants and bars, a gorgeous rooftop pool (that you can see the Burj Khalifa from!) and the most impeccable service I've ever received anywhere, I am sure that you would not be disappointed staying here. Oh, and did I mention the breakfast buffet? Don't get me started. Just remember to try the French Toast. Yum! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how amazing the hotel is. It's the staff and customer service that you receive that impacts your stay the most. We were blown away by the fabulous staff and customer service that we received at the Shangri La Hotel Dubai. Happy and safe travels, Debs :) Disclaimer: I stayed at the Shangri La Hotel Dubai as a guest of the hotel whilst on a sponsored trip with Dubai Tourism. All opinions expressed are my own.

I've been a bit down in the dumps lately. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because of all of the transitions happening in my life... or lack of sleep... or both. Hopefully I'll feel better once summer starts. In the meantime, I've been doing quite a bit of crafting to cheer myself up. Recently I took my love of rainbow crafts and combined it with my love for paper plate crafts to make... tada! This lovely rainbow paper plate weaving craft! Let's Weave a Rainbow! This post contains affiliate links. This means that I make a teeny tiny bit of money from any purchases made through the Amazon links below. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure policy, click here. A Little Background and some Tangents... This craft was inspired by Cassie Stephens' awesome woven tree art projects that she did with her 3rd graders. (If you haven't seen this art project, you need to check it out. Seriously. These kids did some gorgeous work!) Instead of doing trees, I made myself a rainbow. Oh! It's time for 2 random tangents: 1) At my son's preschool they have this lovely poem that they say every day with the kids: Chase a few rainbows Swing on a star Keep your face to the sun And be the best that you are. (Lovely, isn't it? Good advice for kids and adults too.) 2) And... if you are like me and always on the lookout for good books... here are our 15+ favorite books on rainbows: A Rainbow of My Own Planting a Rainbow The Magic School Bus Makes a Rainbow The Rainbow Goblins The Rainbow Book Elmer and The Rainbow My Many Colored Days The Day the Crayons Quit Moonbear's Skyfire Mix it Up A Day With No Crayons Red: A Crayon's story The Crayon Box that talked Mouse Paint Little Blue and Little Yellow A Color of His Own Quest Ok! Let's Weave a rainbow! First, I cut a paper plate in half and painted it with tempera paint to look like the sky. Notes: Usually I encourage using cheap paper plates for crafts, but this time you need to use nice thick sturdy ones. I added clouds later on. It made the sky look nicer that way, I think. Then, I cut out 7 slits on top of the plate and 1 slit on the bottom. Then, I created my loom with some yarn. (I tied the two ends in the back.) Then, I started weaving the rainbow, starting from purple first. I tied on the purple strand to a grey one. Then, I wrapped masking tape around the other end of my purple yarn to help me weave faster. To weave, I simply went over, under, over, under, etc... To change colors, I tied on the next color yarn. Once I finished, I tied on the red strand to a grey one. And that's it! I really hope you enjoy making this craft with your kiddos too! Looking for more fun weaving crafts?
