On July 4, 1971 there was a major railway accident at Surbiton Station when a down Portsmouth fast train collided with a derailed train of PW Dept ballast wagons and partially overturned. Fortunately there were no fatalities and only three passengers were detained in hospital (although they probably thought that was three too many) but considerable damage was caused to the bridge over Upper Brighton Road, causing it to be closed to road traffic. Bus routes 65 and 71 therefore had to be diverted via St Marks Hill, Ewell Road and Ditton Road. According to the record in my possession railway traffic returned to normal after 2 days but the bridge remained blocked for a much longer period, certainly over a week. Consequently I was able to photograph RT1748 on the diversion on the following Sunday.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" showing at the Granada Cinema, with "Waterloo" to follow next week, help date this shot of RF487 rolling past the old C & A store.
65 and 71 were the last RT routes in Kingston - 65 was the last of all, and one of the last on LT.
It seems to have been lost in the mists of time that for a period in the early seventies Sunday operation on routes 71 and 285 was converted to OMO RF's. The statue of Sir Hugh Bentall gazes down from its plinth above the main entrance to the store that bears his name. At the time it was the largest department store in the country outside the West End and the fourth largest overall, selling just about everything. The current store is but a shadow of it, partly eclipsed by the John Lewis store that now occupies much of the space in the right background of this photo. This particular 725 doesn't seem to be doing much business.

Virtually nothing in the background to this photo remains unchanged today - the whole area is now covered by the John Lewis store. Even the bridge has been widened. Note also the trolleybus pole on the extreme right, one of about eight on the bridge that carried the street lighting fixtures and were therefore left unmolested until the mid nineties when they were replaced by new lighting so bright that it could probably be seen from space.
Ryan and Laura had a beautiful wedding at the Senate Garage in Kingston, New York. As the name of the venue suggests, it is a converted garage dating back to the 1920s located right next to the old senate house. The space is industrial looking with exposed brick and an open floor plan with a garden

Built 1971 AEC Swift 4MP2R MCW B33D In 1976 the 211 was further diverted, being sent to hunt for customers in the no-man's-land between Molesey and Hersham - an area previously known mostly for gravel pits but which by then was the location of another new housing development, the Field Common Estate. SMS560 has that location duly recorded on its blind.

London Country's RT's were getting thin on the ground by 1977, and the two lads upstairs were taking full advantage of the deep front opening windows! RT981 spent its entire service life as a Country Area/London Country vehicle; it has survived in preservation in Central Area colours.
