The statue of Sir Hugh Bentall gazes down from its plinth above the main entrance to the store that bears his name. At the time it was the largest department store in the country outside the West End and the fourth largest overall, selling just about everything. The current store is but a shadow of it, partly eclipsed by the John Lewis store that now occupies much of the space in the right background of this photo. This particular 725 doesn't seem to be doing much business.
