Autumn Allium Duo If you're in need of inspiration today, quickly head over to the website of Vancouver, Canada artist Kirsten Chursinoff! Kirsten uses scraps of many different fabrics sewn together as her backgrounds, resulting in gorgeous gradations of color. I'm looking at all my little scraps very differently now! Rosehips and Umbrels On top of these pieced backgrounds, she machine and hand embroiders little pieces of nature - flowers, fruit, leaves, even weeds. Knapweed 2 See more of her work on her Facebook page here and read an informative interview on Creative Machine Embroidery's blog here. Happy Creating! Deborah
Anemones are animals but they are often described as "flower-like". These ones are gathered like a garden bed of subtle colour undulating under the water on the ocean rock. Machine stitching with lots of hand embroidery, some couching and beads. Low Tide blog post: kirstensfabricart.blogspot.ca/2012/07/low-tide-continues.... SOLD 5” x 6 ½” 12" x 15" framed

I love berry picking! I love the taste of the berries and the shape and colour of the little tasty jewels. Himalayan Blackberries are an invasive species here in BC and will grow almost anywhere if given a chance. As far as invaders go, at least this one brings an edible component. We do have a Pacific trailing blackberry which is not as well know, but is native to this area. The evergreen blackberry is also found here and can be identified by the jagged, incised leaves. While working on my Low Tide series, I managed to put together a few pieces for a commission. I liked returning to the rich tones of autumn. It's nice to have a few different projects on the go - jumping between colour palettes keeps things fresh. Commission, one of three. 8" x 10" 17" x 21" framed SOLD www.chursinoff.com/kirsten/

I tried something new with the Meadowsweet. I made my usual background out of a hundred or so scrap pieces, but then I added colour with Jacquard Textile paints. I painted after most of the stitching was complete. You can see the glowing effect around the blossoms. I darkened the area just outside of the stitched blossoms. French knots (in my loopy and loose way), appliqué, free-motion, couching. The plant does have red stems, which are fun and rather vein-like. Detail shot of the previous piece. The little stars in the background are floating seeds and twinkles of late summer sunshine. When magnified like this the sewing threads look like ropes! www.chursinoff.com/kirsten

Close-up view showing the prickly stems of these berry-red hips.
SOLD Even though the leaves are barely changing colour, I've been noticing the rose hips hinting at autumn. Working in a series has become an effective way for me to create work in various sizes and price ranges. As I'm working on several pieces at once, I can make use of the colours and materials to their full potential. It also reduces the thread changes in the sewing machine! 3” x 4 ¼” 9" x 11" framed www.chursinoff.com/kirsten/

Kirsten Chursinoff "Honeysuckle Sunshine" 2011 Fabric, couching, machine stitching, and hand stitching. Honeysuckle is the Pantone colour of the year for 2011. Here's my interpretation of this colour through my textile depiction of honeysuckle. Detail showing the star shapes on the patchwork background as well as the couched threads and French knots. The background on this one is free motion zigzag stitch on over 100 small pieces of fabric. This fabric was purchased years ago. I didn't dye it myself, but wish I could. Sewing threads, embroidery floss and some hand dyed cotton. I've been collecting images from magazines and photocopies from books. My photo of Honeysuckle 2010 Rough sketches, templates and marker sketches on transparencies.
