If you're in the mood for laughs, grab a copy of Community Klepto, a dark comedy novel by Kelly I. Hitchcock. Twenty-five-year-old Ann Josephson hates having to do anything involving people. A compulsive kleptomaniac, she often visits the local community center to work out and manage her social anxiety by stealing other people's stuff she doesn't necessarily need. However, she inevitably crosses the line by stealing one item too many, leading the center to hire a new security guard. Additionally, a guy called Joe asks her out, and soon, Ann finds herself joining a dodgeball team, a yoga class, and a kickboxing class in rapid succession. But it is when Ann finds out that Joe is a police officer that her world begins to crumble beneath her feet. What if Joe figures out her secret hoarding lair? Community Klepto is a story about a young woman's attempts to navigate her sociopathic ways by acquiring material possessions that don't belong to her. Kelly I. Hitchcock tells a hilarious tale of a kleptomaniac who digs herself into a deeper hole by refusing to adhere to social norms despite getting chance after chance to redeem herself. Ann is a riveting character. I found some of her inner monologues incredibly funny, as they give you a glimpse into her dysfunctional mind and how she processes her surroundings and sees others. I also liked her dynamic with Joe and felt the two played off each other brilliantly. Anyone who loves dark comedy stories with flawed antagonists will enjoy this one.
Kleptomania is not simply stealing! People suffering from Kleptomania have problems resisting the urge to take things they do not even need or want and that have no value or are easily affordable to them. It can result in serious emotional distress to those suffering the condition as well as people around them. Kle

The woman invited a few new acquaintances to her place but left out someone who called herself “a total klepto.” What she didn’t expect was how much backlash her decision would cause.
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is exactly what it sounds like — a nature reserve and temple complex with more than 340 long-tailed macaques roaming freely. These entertaining socialites do not hesitate to climb on, steal from, and perch from visitors brave enough to interact with them. We thought all our junk was bolted down, but alas a furry, klepto-maniacal macaque lifted some trash peeking from our bag. I could visit this park daily, as I love animals and love seeing them uncaged like this. Macaques are incredibly energetic, mischievous, and social and really seemed to enjoy interacting with the visitors, who exhibited a mix of terror and delight. Obviously, I was on the end of delight and didn’t mind them crawling on my lap and even my head (hubby said ‘no way’ to this kind of intimacy). I never picked up any monkeys, but when I sat down they took that as an invitation both to pickpocket and climb me. I’m not advising this because every piece of literature and signage warns against it, but I think retaining a calm demeanor helped, even when I got bit! Surf at Seminyak Seminyak is the chiller neighbor of Kuta, with less partying, but plenty of villas and shops. Surfers love this spot and even if you don’t surf, you’ll love the wide beaches. Lunch at Mount Batur When words cannot describe over-the-top natural beauty, I’m grateful to have photographs like these. I have the tendency to wax hyperbolic about the things I love (my man, music, travel), and this time I’m not going to censor myself. Bali really blew my mind, in part due to this majestic volcano, Mount Batur, the second largest on the sub-tropical island. It’s a relatively active volcano with a lava field punctuated by porous black boulders to prove it. A caldera lake that reminds me of Italy’s Lake Como beckons southeast of the mountain. Danau Batur was begging to be seen up close, so we convinced our driver to skip the next temple on the agenda and take us to lakeside hot springs (see forthcoming post). Just being near the mountain was invigorating for me. Without going all Crouching Tiger, I truly felt a sort of energy from it, and at the same time, a peaceful tranquility. We couldn’t have had a better view, a refreshing breeze wafting through open-air balcony of Grand Puncak Sari Restaurant where we lunched. This is a good time to tell you just how fresh, spicy, and flavorful Indonesian food is. For someone who subsists on veggies, tofu, and seafood, I was in heaven. Sip Civet Coffee in Ubud Let’s get this out of the way, civet coffee is from the feces of an animal. And no, it doesn’t taste like poop. Civets eat the coffee bean whole and poop it whole. The beans are washed before being ground and brewed. You can sample dozens of kinds of coffee for about $25, which includes a tour of the coffee plantation. Stay at Maya Ubud Checking in to the luxurious Maya Ubud is a five-star experience. Bali is hot and you’ll be sweaty from a day zipping around in a taxi bound for temples, coffee plantations, rice fields, and beaches. At Maya Ubud, you’re greeted with a welcome drink and a cold towel. Cool off in the open-air lobby before you’re whisked away to a colorful, modern room overlooking a meandering river, a garden courtyard, or (you guessed it) rice fields. Temple Empul Tirta This popular temple that draws the the pious who light incense, pray, and take a dip in its sacred pools. Gunung Kawi Temple Not for the faint of heart or flimsy of shoe, a visit to the idyllic Gunung Kawi temple in Tampaksiring requires descending nearly 400 steps, which is fine until you realize there’s no way out but back up. As Balinese never miss a merchandising opportunity, the steps down to the temple are lined with fierce hawkers (watch out for the women) of sarongs, jewelry, and all the standard Balinese bric-a-brac. Whatever you do, don’t buy until you’re almost out of the place. The Balinese have what can only be described as a smell for consumers. One particularly feisty shop keeper grabbed my hand and wouldn’t let go until I bought something (I didn’t). They are all intent on selling you a sarong to meet Hindu standards when temple-going, but a less cumbersome sash will do, and is provided with the cost of admission. Every second building in Bali is a temple of varying size, but it’s easy to see why this one is a sort of mecca for locals. A crystal clear stream runs through the center and a small waterfall is tucked in the corner. It looks like the set of “Indiana Jones” where some frightening ritual sacrifice might be performed, but alas devoted Hindus were offering the usual floral and incense basket which can be found in the millions around the island. Watch a Balinese Dance in Ubud Balinese dance is both transfixing and cacophonous; beautiful and nightmarish. It’s simply a must-see experience of Balinese culture, storytelling, and movement. Check out the show at Ubud Palace and get there early to sit front and center. Tegallalang Rice Field Not having seen any others like this, I am convinced this Ubud rice terrace is the most impressive. It’s a popular spot for photography, tours, and picking up bric-a-brac. Stay at Santi Mandala Resort Santi Mandala Villa & Spa was nothing short of magical. For $100/night we had a private villa with exotic outdoor bathroom at this quiet resort in Ubud, Bali. There’s nothing as serene as sitting on your private deck gazing at a waterfall and watching the birds flitter by. The grounds are lush, hilly, and floral with lots of stone paths to explore on your spa day in, which you’ll need after pounding the pavement for a day or two. The excellent breakfast spread included pink crepes and a pool view. What’s your favorite thing to do in Bali?
I didn’t visit every destination on my 2015 bucket list this year, but that’s just fine. I’m more interested in quality travel than in quantity. This is perhaps why I don’t travel full-time. I grounded myself for six months (!) to work on my first documentary film. I’m glad to report I’m almost done… And I’m typing this from Bali, so don’t feel sorry for me. 🙂 I thought instead of reviewing just this year, I’d look back on the last 15 years of travel… Most Otherworldly Landscape Te Puia Geothermal Park, New Zealand This was a toss-up between Iceland and New Zealand, but having experienced the geothermal wonder you see above, New Zealand takes the win. Te Puia, a 60-hectare valley with more than 500 geothermal wonders, is absolutely mesmerizing in its beauty, power, and otherworldliness. Where else can you feel like you’re both on the Moon and a Swiss alpine lake? This landscape was begging for an impromptu photo shoot, so I hurried back to our campervan, changed, and twirled my way through the park, undeterred by the curious Chinese tour group cueing up around us. If a heavy rain had not swept in, I never would have left. Truly a magical day. Best National Park Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China If you ever wanted to live inside a Maxfield Parrish painting, then book the next flight to China. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is simply one of the most ethereal places on Earth. These staggering karst spires inspired the film“Avatar” and you have to see them in person to see why. Best Campervan Trip Iceland I find campervans charming. Being totally free to wander a place without worrying about hotel reservations makes the campervan an ideal way to explore Iceland. The Hubs and I rented a double-decker in New Zealand, enjoying the same freedom. All the romance of having your bed on wheels doesn’t mean there’s no work. I went to Iceland for photography and while I was filming away, the Hubs was busy maintaining the vehicle, which is more demanding than your average van. Best Cultural Experience Guam This was a toss-up between spending 10 days in a rural village in Zhangjiajie, China and the cultural research I did for my film about Guam, “American Soil, Chamorro Soul.” Visually and viscerally, China was stunning. I loved living with locals and seeing the daily rituals of farmers, street vendors, mothers, fathers, and cooks. On the other hand, I have learned an incredible amount about Chamorro culture and have a newfound respect for cultural preservation in a U.S. territory that has been repeatedly colonized for the last 500 years. Best Architecture Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan Mosque is only the third largest mosque in the world, but it is rumored to be at the top of the expense chain. Swarovski crystal chandeliers, 24-carat gold plated pillars, and the largest Persian carpet in the world adorn this domed jewel of the desert. Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Travel Borneo The Sungai Sekonyer river is remote enough not to have a dedicated Wikipedia page. Only the least reliable regional carriers fly there…And sometimes don’t fly there even when you have a reservation. We were flying there, not just for a boat ride, but to see apes, specifically semi-wild orangutans who call Tanjung Puting National Park home. The massive 4,150 square kilometer park would allow us to get up close and personal some of the 6,000 wild orangutans living in Tanjung Puting, the single largest population in the world. Best Adventure Heli Glacier Landing, New Zealand Landing on a glacier was magical. We watched other choppers descend into the wide plateau under the bright mid-morning sun and all too soon, we climbed back into ours. Our flight took in Fox Glacier and the 12,000-foot peak of Mt. Cook. We hovered above ice ‘marshmallows,’ precipitous waterfalls, and isolated pools, flanked by green sub-tropical rainforest. Best Animal Experience Sacred Monkey Forest Temple, Bali Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is exactly what it sounds like — a nature reserve and temple complex with more than 340 long-tailed macaques roaming freely. These entertaining socialites do not hesitate to climb on, steal from, and perch from visitors brave enough to interact with them. We thought all our junk was bolted down, but alas a furry, klepto-maniacal macaque lifted some trash peeking from our bag. Best Luxury Experience Holiday Inn Macao You’ve never seen a Holiday Inn like this. That’s because it’s the first of its kind in the world — a 5-star version of the faithful franchise. Holiday Inn’s first 5-star hotel lives up to the rating with impressively chic everything. The 1,224 guest rooms are outfitted with all the creature comforts you need, including free WIFI, shower and soaking tub, which you’ll use liberally after pounding the cobblestone streets of Macau. You even have the choice between soft and firm pillows. The Holiday Inn staff was incredibly responsive to my every need and delivered the toiletries I requested within seconds. And did I mention the Zen glam Bodhi Spa which offers indigenous Australian stone therapy? Best Urban Experience Singapore Little India, Singapore is a sensory assault, from the heady aroma of floral garlands hanging from sidewalk stalls to the smell of rich, delicious curry that seems to permeate every nook and cranny. Brightly colored dresses adorn doorways of shops offering everything from sparkly bracelets to stacks of electronics. I loved all of Singapore — from the Arab Quarter to Marina Bay Sands to the fabulous Singapore Zoo. Best B&B Kauri Villa, Auckland We awoke to a stunning view of rolling green hills and the sounds of sheep and goats greeting us as we peered out the large bay window. Incredible. We took our coffee, tea, toast, and local jam in the majestic dining room along with a couple from Australia. Our hosts introduced themselves, the farm, and even let us feed the animals. Can you believe this house was transplanted from Auckland? Best Beach Saipan While the island’s western coast is lined with resorts and luxury shopping, the rest of the island is a mix of impenetrable pandanus jungles, dirt roads, and rocky cliffs with views more breathtaking than the last. The moment you shed your city skin is the most this tiny island in the middle of nowhere will seduce you completely. Best Music Fuji Rock Festival, Japan I spent three days photographing my favorite bands from the pit at Japan’s largest outdoor music festival. While rock festivals in the States symbolize rebellion, in Japan they are about camping and family and nature. There was a real convivial feeling at the Fuji Rock Festival and I loved every minute of getting up close and personal with Lorde, Basement Jaxx, Outkast, Foster the People, and Bombay Bicycle Club, to name a few. Best Media Trip Cairns I don’t know why travel bloggers criticize media fams (familiarization tours). Even though I’d been to Cairns, I was happy to go again when United Airlines invited me. I had already gone to Hong Kong with United, so I knew it would be a harried, but exhilarating three days. What made this media trip the best was the sheer amount of adrenaline pumping activities that were planned for us. White water rafting, climbing an indoor jungle gym, and then this serene experience — soaring through the treetops in Kuranda. Best Underwater Experience Palau Snorkeling is a must in Palau’s pristine and teeming waters. Prepare to be dazzled by fish every color of the rainbow, psychedelic two-foot clams as bright as a loom, and Technicolor coral. Float effortlessly and take in the sound of nothing but an ethereal crackling like a dim electric current and fish munching on coral. Scrape, scrape, scrape. I left out Best Food because it’s completely impossible to decide between my favorites: Barcelona, Tokyo, Singapore, and Bali!
