KTM made their bones with dirt bikes, but these days they're just as well known for their wild street bikes. Their hit list includes models like the KTM 990 Supermoto—a 999.8 cc v-twin motard with aggressive lines and decent components. First released in 2008, it came in two variants: the purist 990 SMR, and later the more touring-focused 990 SMT. The SMT was still a goer, but weighed more and looked weird, thanks to its deeply stepped seat and its nose fairing. But hobby builder Nick Murray's fixed all that. Based in Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, Nick's

“The most dangerous motorcycle ever built.” This is a paraphrase, or maybe the exact title, from a magazine review I remember reading shortly after the KTM 950 Adventure S was first introduced in 2003. Obviously, I was intrigued. The author was waxing ironic by indicating that the engineering in this oddity of adventure motorcycles was […]

As it is hard to really grasp what a book is about by looking at its cover, it also takes time and effort to discover what truly lies behind that facade of plastic and metal when you first see the KTM 890 ADVENTURE. After using the bike daily and clocking almost 10,000km on it, I finally got to appreciate all the small details that make it one of the most technical motorcycles on the market.
Projekt DT-A is the brainchild of a German engineer, who designed an all-wheel-drive off-roader based on a KTM 990 Adventure. Fitted with a proprietary frame and front swingarm, the prototype adopts a mechanical front transmission system engineered for a no-compromise adventure ride.

MCN has just ridden the new for 2009 KTM 990 Adventure R for the first time on a 250km on/off road trek in Sardinia. The new motorcycle takes over from the 990 Adventure S as the top-of-the-range on/off road machine in KTM’s range, and is also the most powerful yet with 115bhp from the Superduke-derived engine, 18bhp more than the older machine. The suspension also gets 55mm extra suspension travel to give it extra off-road capability, but otherwise the mechanicals are the same as the 2009 990 Adventure (which also gets a small power boost to 106bhp and a smoother-running crank design). MCN’s Chris Newbigging has been riding the bike and says: “The Adventure R is notably more punchy than the standard bike, but isn’t ferocious and is easy to ride on an unfamiliar road because of the extra flexibility. “The taller seat height can make the bike awkward at a standstill, even though I am six feet tall. It has extra suspension travel compared to standard, firmer settings make it more
