Harvested from a long ago forgotten volume of American wildflowers from the mid-1950s, we're proud to present this charming American Wildflower classic; the beautiful yellow Erythroniun americanium; better known as the Dogtooth Violet. Erythroniun albidum; the white Dogtooth Violet is shown here as well. What a charming frame-able vintage find! This gorgeous 8" x 10.5" original vintage botanical from 1954 is printed on a heavy matte finished paper; just as smooth and flat as the day it was printed over half a century ago. Some common names include yellow avalanche lily, glacier lily, dogtooth fawn lily, Yellow Fawn-lily, Yellow Dogtooth Violet, and Glacier Lily. A native from western North America from British Columbia to New Mexico and California. Growing from a bulb, the flower shoots up 10-12" tall. The flowers are a bright lemon yellow color, with the antlers starting white and eventually turning brown. It grows in mountain meadows, slopes, and open clearings as well. It is edible if you need to survive but leave for bears and deer. Zones 4-8 Germination Mix seeds and soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Seed should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered light and keep moist. Seeds germinate very slowly and may take more than a year to germinate.

The plants are only in growth from late winter to late spring so the ground cover effect is ephemeral. The appearance of Trout Lily’s gray-green leaves mottled with brown or gray, which allegedly resemble the coloring of brook trout. It blooms in spring and the flower color is yellow. Each plant sends up a single flower stem with a pair of leaves. Trout lilies grow in colonies that can be up to 300 years old. Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a shady position in a cold frame. Water lightly in summer, it should germinate in autumn or winter. Stored seed requires a period of cold stratification. Sow as early in spring as possible in a cold frame. Sow the seed thinly so that it will not be necessary to prick them out for their first year of growth. Give an occasional liquid feed to the seedlings to make sure that they do not become nutrient deficient. When the plants are dormant, pot up the small bulbs putting 2 - 3 bulbs in each pot.
