Living organisms are hierarchically classified into 10 levels of biological organization that range from a simple cell to a massive sphere of all life forms. Explore the levels of organization in detail here.
With this activity on the Levels of Organization (cells -organism), students can organize, color, label, and describe each level. Bonus- fits in their interactive notebook! If you like this resource, check out my labs and other resources!Thank you and Happy Teaching!Spunky Science...
Looking for a new way to teach the Levels of Organization in living things? This is it! Instead of just showing a slide show....have students access previous knowledge and critical thinking skills to figure out the levels on their own! I use this to introduce the levels of organization in living things. I am including several options: *one that sorts the levels from atom to organism *one that sorts the levels from cell to organism For each of these sorts, I have included 2 versions, one with the levels listed in the correct order (and just the pictures and descriptions shuffled) and one with the levels needing to be sorted so students can sort them into the correct order. (this one is much trickier!) Use one or both depending on the level of your students! This could also be used as a formative assessment tool! Continue with the levels with a sort for organism to biosphere! Ecology Levels of Organization Sort: Organism to Biosphere, cut and paste Enjoy!
This mini bundle includes everything you need to teach Levels of organization, both Biological and Ecological plus 2 exit tickets that you get for free. The posters are ideal for your classroom decor, you can print, laminate and hang them on the walls or you can print small versions for student use. Card sort activities are ideal for a quick and fun review of the topic. Included: Levels of Biological Organization POSTERS (Levels of biological organization poster with levels in order (cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism) together with pictures and Levels of biological organization with explanations/definitions and pictures) Levels of Biological Organization CARD SORT ACTIVITY ( instructions; 20 sorting cards (levels of biological organization: cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism; definitions, pictures; answer key) Levels of Ecological Organization POSTERS (Six levels of ecological organization with picture examples (organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere) and Six levels of ecological organization with definitions) Levels of Ecological Organization CARD SORT ACTIVITY (Instructions; 18 sorting cards (levels of organization (organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere); definitions, pictures); Answer key) Exit tickets (2 exit tickets) If you like what I create don't forget to follow my TpT store by clicking on the green "follow me" next to my seller picture to receive notifications of new products and upcoming sales. Students are provided with a blank table and a scrambled picture and definition sheet. They must re-organize the words, pictures, and definitions in the right order. Included in this activity are the terms: atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism. Works great as an introduction to a major biology unit or even as a review. This can also be made in to a race (individual, partners, or group). A teacher answer key is provided and the original document can be modified in order to fit your class requirements!
Learning the levels of organization, that is! My students are working hard on our living systems unit. Our newest anchor chart is all about the organization of living things. I am a huge fan of anchor charts because it helps my students organize the content into bite sized pieces. In our living systems unit we discuss the levels of organization, plant and animal cells, classification and cell theory. I like to make an anchor chart for each of the different topics and hang them around the room as we complete them. Even more than that, I like the students to have their own copies of each anchor chart. So while I'm building a big one, they are making a smaller version at their desks. The levels of organization student version has all the boxes, but they're all mixed up. The students first figure out which boxes go together and then color those boxes to match. Once colored they are cut and pasted to the empty boxes on the final page. I love that my students end a unit with a set of anchor charts all their own. By the end of the year they have a nice science collection, highlighting the content they learned in a way that's easy to reference and, hopefully, easy to remember! The Let's Build: Levels of Organization Anchor Chart can be found here. The Let's Build: Levels of Organization student version can be found here.

Lots of good exam questions on the kidney. I expect the kidney to appear frequently in exams as they are very synoptic, give opportunities to require calculation and get students to analyse and explain data.

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM Teach students an easy way to remember each of the 4 levels and how they are organized within an ecosystem! Using this pyramid shows students a visual of the most basic level of an organism, to all of the components of an ecosystem, including both abiotic and biotic factors. This printable resource can serve as a study guide or reference sheet. I used this in class as a poster and had students glue this into their interactive science notebook to refer back to. Learning the levels of organization with a fun cut-and-paste activity that works well on its own or in an interactive notebook! This file contains all you need to create a chart detailing the levels of organization of living things, including picture, term and definition. A black and white version of the completed chart, a color version of the completed chart and the student version of the chart are all included. In the student version, the pictures, terms and definitions are all mixed up. They need to be colored, cut and sorted before being glued onto the page with the empty boxes. I have also included arrows so students can see that organization moves in a set order (cell, tissue, organ, organ system and organism). After introducing the topic, I have my students color the boxes that will be cut and pasted. For example, I have them color the picture, term and definition of cell all green. I then have the students cut out the boxes and glue them in the correct order on the page of empty boxes, adding the arrows at the very end. *A blog post outlining how I use this activity in my classroom can be found here. *An anchor chart version is also available. ******SAVE MONEY****** Buy the bundle... So I've been getting a lot of emails lately, asking for the template used in the projects shown in my Student Project Display post. Unfortunately, I can't share a template because I didn't use a template. My students were just THAT amazing! I can, however, share a tutorial on how the project was done. I will be posting tutorials all this week... For the Organization of Life Foldable 1. On an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper held vertically (any color or kind you want), make lines across at the following measurements: 1/2", 1 3/4", 3 1/2", 5 3/4", and 8". The spaces between each line will get larger and larger as you move down the page, just like the levels of organization in living things get larger and larger! 2. Fold the paper in half lengthwise (or vertically... or hot dog). Open it back up. 3. Cut from the left side of the paper along each line to the center point only. (Do NOT cut all the way across the page! Although, I guarantee you'll have at least one student that does this!) The left side of your paper now has flaps or tabs. 4. Refold the paper in half lengthwise (along your fold from step 2). And on the front, so the fold is on the left and the tabs open on the right, label each individual tab with the following: Organization of Life, Cells, Tissues, Organs, Organ Systems, Organism. Color, decorate, etc. 5. Open each tab of your foldable. On the left side (the back side of the tab) create a drawing to represent that level of organization. On the right side (the side that was not cut) define/describe each level and include at least one example. Color, decorate, etc. And viola! Organization of Life Foldable! P.S. If your students have poor measuring skills (like mine!) or you only have so much time to spend on this project (like me!), you can always create a template with step 1 above and make photocopies so that students can begin at step 2. It'll save some time. Happy Crafting!

Included is a two page reading passage covering the different levels of organization including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms. The passage gives specific examples for both plants and humans for the different levels, such as leaves and bones to represent organs. A key to help grade is also included. To use, print out the handouts and you can either have students read the passage independently, in pairs, or in larger groups. Questions are given off to the side so that students are sticking to the main ideas of the paragraphs. At the end of the passage, there are more questions to help the students process their thinking. Also provided is the opportunity for students to draw out their understanding of the levels of organization through a flow chart. This is primarily used to supplement in class notes, but could be used for a sub plan or additional work for students not in class.
