Today I'm showing off the finished version of my back to school bulletin board. I first blogged about the preparation stages a few weeks ago. You can read about that by clicking here. Just a reminder, here is my inspiration for the board. Making the giant book ahead of time was really genius. When we got into school, it was super quick to get the board all put together. We used two white plastic table cloths from the dollar store to create clouds. Simply staple the bottom and fold up. That way, you don't see the staples on the bottom edge. Shape and staple the top and stuff all the extra inside for volume. The cover of the giant book was stapled on with a heavy duty staple gun. We then hot glued the pages of the book to the cover. The green you see in the picture above is the start of a vine. It's just twisted tissue paper. We twisted and stapled all the way up to the ceiling. Curled up pipe cleaners and leaves cut from lime tissue paper were also stapled on. The title seemed to not have enough weight on its own. To solve that, we placed each letter on top of a paper plate. I love that technique! It's really eye catching. And that's it! Board complete! Are you interested in even more bulletin board ideas? Making a book to talk about the parts of a book! Whew! I always forget how quickly the first part of the school year goes, and we sure have been BUSY! September has been filled with teaching and/or reviewing with students on how to check their own books in/out on the computer, how... Read more

Or do you call them Cootie-Catchers? One and the same, my friend. The point is, here's an idea to help patrons figure out what to read next. Like so: I originally saw the idea on MLISsing in Action, which actually has all kinds of fun passive displays. But I decided to make my own version of the fortune teller idea: free printables included! Here's the sign and here's the cootie-catcher. There's four versions in the cootie catcher file: the first is what you see: I filled mine all in with actual titles (my favorite middle-grade fiction, as selected from my "What Books to Give a Middle-Grader" flowchart poster). The second version has fortunes, such as "Your next title will begin with the letter 'H'" and "Pick a yellow cover to ensure happiness". Fun stuff like that (which provides a good opportunity to display books that fulfill those fortunes!). The third has blank fortunes, so you could do your own. And fourth is...well, pretty much all blank. Do whatever your heart desires! Here's a brief pictorial representation of how to fold your cootie-catcher... cut out the square fold along the diagonals fold the corners in turn over and fold corners in again ta-da! Or this library has a nice instruction sheet seen here. The point is, it's a fun way to get patrons to try something new! See how your library likes it!

Hi friends! Do you get overwhelmed by all of the library books that your students check in every day? Our guest blogger Amanda Maslonka shares her genius
Being a brand new school librarian is both exciting and scary. All summer, you’ve planned for your new position, but today, you're feeling pretty lost.
It's not anywhere close to unique, but hey, that just makes it classic. This here library display is simple for anyone to do. I'm talking about gettin' wild... What I'm really proud of is the felt animal prints I made. Yep, hand cut from patterns I found online. Can you see the texture? It just adds a bit more glam to it. Safari glam. Just what is needed in the library!
