Louisiana’s state capitol was completed in 1932 and is commonly viewed as a monument to Huey P. Long’s ego. It rises over 450 feet, making it the tallest state capitol in the nation. The firm of Weiss, Dreyfous and Seiferth designed the lovely Art Deco masterpiece. Baton Rouge has been the state capital since 1882. Other capitals include New Orleans (1812-1830), Donaldsonville (1830-1831), New Orleans again (1831-1849), Baton Rouge (1849-1862), New Orleans yet again (Union, 1862-1882), Opelousas (Confederate, 1862-1863), and Shreveport (Confederate, 1863-1865).
