Alessandra Sanguinetti tells the story of two young girls living in a rural province south of Buenos Aires in book one of her ongoing series The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of their Dreams. The San Francisco-based Magnum photographer spent her childhood summers at her father's farm, and found herself drawn to the sisters as they navigated their way from the innocence of childhood to the complexities of puberty—although not at first—Sanguinetti says of her subjects: “Beli and Guille were always running, climbing, chasing chickens and rabbits. Sometimes I'd take their picture just so they'd leave me alone and stop scaring the animals away, but mostly I would shoo them out of the frame. I was indifferent to them until the summer of 1999, when I found myself spending almost everyday with them. They were nine and ten years old then, and one day, instead of asking them to move aside, I let them stay.”
“After being tormented with fear while paralyzed, I will finally wake up in a panic and try my best to calm down…In order to decompress my thoughts, I turn to photography to transform these dreams into something positive and tangible.”

The French academic painter Hugues Merle gained acclaim during his lifetime for his idealised depictions of family life and of historical and religious subjects. He was often associated with his friend and rival, William-Adolphe Bouguereau; in fact, their shared dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, urged Bouguereau to add to his pictorial repertoire Merle's interpretation of familial love, which had defined his most successful Salon entries during the 1840s through the 1960s. Whether imaging modern-day Madonnas with children, Susanna at her bath, or, as here, Mary Magdelene, Merle favoured emotion-filled, often seductive, facial expressions and languid bodies to connote drama and pathos. Indeed, his Mary Magdelene emerges as the enraptured captive of Christ's love. [Heritage Auctions - Oil on canvas, 45.1 x 59.7 cm]
