Description An individual's personal equipment can often reflect a lot on their personality. Especially when comes to something so critical as their choice in personal weapons. While they are small in the final piece "Duel at midnight" I did give a bit of thought to what each character carried as their own rapier. This was period of transition from the rapier to what would be referred to later as the small sword. Now one who has read all posting related to this commission may ask. "Hey this is suppose to be a 17th century setting. What is with these 16th century metal pokers?" Yes two of the rapier hilts are from the 16th century. However it was not unusual for weapons to remain in service for many decades and even centuries after their manufacture. This could be due to several factors. One a weapon could have great personal worth to an individual. It had been his father's blade. It was given to them by their instructor. The individual might of claimed the blade as prize or taken it as a trophy from the field of battle. In any case the sword might remain in services decades after its hilt style had fallen out of fashion. There are even cases of swords through out history receiving in hilts, scabbards and fittings to bring them up to more contemporary standards, or just to replace parts that had worn out from years of general use. This means it is possible that the hilt on a sword was the finest in current Spanish fashion, but the blade was of German make and was forged seventy years before. It must be remember that good blade steel of sword length was terribly expensive and hard to obtain at that time. So blades often got used for decades to even centuries after their creation so long as they were still sound. Even then they may soldier on in some cut down fashion long after their original role had passed.
