An early fabulous pen & ink drawing by Cardwell Higgins in the art deco manner titled "Siamese Dancers", possibly a commissioned work for use by Paramount Films where the artist was under contract in the late 1920s. Higgins completed a series of like minded costumed art deco pen & ink drawings between the years of 1927 - 1929 that were re-marketed as a series of limited edition art prints under the guidance of Charles Martignette in 1979. The work is finely matted and framed behind glass in a handsome art deco black and silver fine gallery frame.
About This pen and ink drawing with gouache highlights is an early work by renowned illustrator Cardwell Higgins. A sublime example of his art deco style, Higgins suffuses this piece in darkness with luminous highlights that emphasize the strength and power of the shirtless man in the foreground, his muscles coiled, as he prepares to strike a blow with his sledgehammer. The piece is somehow both exotic and all-American at the same time. The block atop the anvil glows with smoke that swirls upward in a mysterious, hypnotizing allure while the chiseled man speaks to the booming American industrialism of the time. About Featuring a central image of Florence Vidor surrounded by purple orchids, as befitting her billing by Paramount Pictures as "The Lovely Orchid Lady of the Screen," this watercolor on board painting surrounds the silent film star with vignettes that show moments from a proposed (never completed) silent film which was to be titled "Love--The Magician." This was created for an exhibitor's book produced by Paramount, which was distributed to encourage theater owners across the country to commit to screening films by the production company in the upcoming year. Because of the tight production schedules for silent films, and the long lead to book theaters, there would often be films which never got produced advertised in these books, which were really more about advertising the stars than particular films. Along with Cardwell Higgins, who created this example, Alberto Vargas and Henry Clive's works appeared in the Paramount Exhibitor's Books of the day. A tear sheet from the published exhibitor book of the artwork is included in the sale. Sight Size 16 1/2" x 23" Framed 24 1/4" x 31"
