Corset making is HARD - isn't it? Actually, it isn't as hard as it seems. There's basic information online about how to make a corset, but there's a sorry lack of information on how to do it WELL. So if you're serious about ending the frustration and making a corset that you can wear with pride, here are a few tips from a pro.

For better or worse, France introduced corsets in the 1550s - and they spread in popularity, throughout the world, until the early 1900's. Most often, this fashion phase emphasized a curvy figure by reducing the waist and exaggerating the bust and hips in contrast. Fashion is constantly changing, but we think corsets are best left in history. What do you think?
This is a modern 16-panel over-bust corset pattern with a beautiful curve to accentuate your waist (3'' waist reduction on standard sizes). INCLUDES A 28 PAGE DOCUMENT OF GENERAL CORSET CONSTRUCTION & FITTING NOTES (see video)! Note – a 2'' back gap is factored into this pattern. The corset length measures 37cm (15'') at the front and 37cm or 42cm at the back. There is an option for a low and a high back. This pattern is incredibly flattering. The rib shaping is hour-glass so it is comfortable for those who cannot tolerate any pressure on the ribs. It is relatively short with a high swoop over the iliac crest and has a lovely sweetheart neckline. There are additional sections for increasing or decreasing the cup size from the standard C cup to an A, B, D, DD, E cup (approx.), and for variable hip and waist to under-bust sections (these sections are attached at the waistlines). See the measurement chart in the photos above. This allows you to get a closer fit before amending your toile. Although I include a tonne of written information with this pattern, I don't include a video of how to make this corset, sorry - there are plenty of YouTube tutorials on line if you are more of a visual learner. This pattern is drafted in AutoCAD and downloadable as a pdf file - you will need to print out on size A (letter) or A4 paper, making sure 'actual size' is ticked in your print dialogue box. If you use Adobe Previewer to open this PDF you can isolate layers, thus printing out only the sizes/lines you require. A toile must always be made to check the fit of corset patterns – at this stage you can take in the smaller of your measurements and transfer these amendments to your pattern to ensure a perfect fitting corset! You will also be able to test the length of the corset at the toile stage - lengthen or shorten just above the waist. As with all corset patterns, this pattern is not a beginners level sewing project. Please take a look at my website where I have lots of information about corset making. https://youtu.be/KkM5lhVRDKY Please remember that this pattern can't be used for commercial profit (such as a line of ready to wear corsets) - use to your hearts content, but only for yourself and clients!

In corsetry, there are certain standards that are widely accepted or even assumed, either tacitly or overtly. Examples of this might include the old "20 bones" minimum, multi-layer coutil construction, the idea of "seasoning," and vocabulary such as "bespoke." How did these standards come to be? In a market that is simultaneously niche and diverse, who is the arbiter of such things? And with so many novel corsetry concepts, from […]

While there are relatively few networking and professionalization events in the lingerie industry, one of the most revered is also one of the newest --- The Oxford Conference of Corsetry, held over the summer at Oxford College. For those unfamiliar, The Oxford Conference of Corsetry (otherwise known as OCOC) is a three-year-old event, created by corsetmakers, for corsetmakers, and dedicated to the study of corsetry. People fly in from all […]
Yes, it's more corset videos! I told you we did a lot. ^_^ These two cover putting and taking off a corset, respectively. Think of them a bit like Corsetry 101 videos...especially if you prefer to watch someone practice a skill instead of reading a blog post about it (I admit, I tend to be biased towards blog posts, but I'm learning that certain things just don't lend themselves well […]
Want to get into the world of me-made lingerie? Trying a kit is a great place to start. Just like there is medical jargon, there is lingerie jargon. My last post reviewed bra making fabrics, but as you well know, you need more than fabric to make a bra. Like most bras, the Marlborough calls for about a half dozen different notions. That may sound like a lot, but each has a clear role to play in creating this bra. Let’s review them one by one. Underarm and Band Elas

The 1880s corset is finished! I had my doubts but this corset project was surprisingly easy, not at all frustrated-hair-pulling-inducing or, well, evil in that special way that only corsets and stays can be. I now dare to say it, having safely finished, that I actually liked making this corset. Shocking. The pattern is from Norah Waugh's Corsets and Crinolines and I really didn't modify it at all. The top fabric is the same I used for my 1820s pelisse and it's still one of my all time favourite fabrics. There's a steel busk and spiral steel bones, metal eylets and I used jute yarn for the cording on the bust. I feel very accomplished :) I had trouble pulling the lacing evenly. I believe the fit of the top edge will be better when I adjust the lacing. I had a bit of fun with the flossing I sewed the busk in by hand, and also the cording and the topstitched boning channels on the front and front side pieces. Otherwise the corset is machine-sewn.
As I was organizing my sewing room today I came across my regency stays and realized I hadn't even tried them on since getting the laces for them. I've been so busy with 1860's things I guess I kinda forgot about them! So I decided to try them on and see how they fit before putting them away. Hopefully at the end of this month I'll have an occasion to wear them - depends on how much sewing I can get done between now and then. If all else fails, I can at least wear the white dress for a day trip to the event and the babies have their boone frocks. The older kids will be gone at camp so they won't need outfits this time. First of all, I LOVE THESE! The few little subtle changes made to the pattern really helped make these a lot more comfortable than the last version. It's so weird that in a corset the difference of a half inch here, a quarter inch there can really affect the fit and overall look. The busk is a perfect length and width and the cups are just right. Rose is still nursing but only once or twice a day now so I feel comfortable in thinking that these ought to still fit when she is weaned. The other adjustment was the shoulder straps. I moved them over towards the center back to help them not fall off the shoulder and that seemed to help tremendously. I'm very pleased with the silhouette. The "divorced" look to the bosom is exactly what I wanted. Finally! Success in that area. The back lacing gap is fairly wide but I'd much rather it be a bit wide than too narrow. When the gap is too small I get really bad back discomfort after a while. I tried on my dress over the stays to see how it fits. I haven't really had much experience with this dress yet. For the Vernet project I made it during a cold autumn and wore a jacket over it and since then it has been hanging in the back of the closet. Upon getting it out again and examining it I really do like it. When I think back upon the construction of it my memories are a mass of endless tucks. This one had a lot of tucks! And I think I had problems with not having enough material for sleeves, so I had to piece them in two places. This is one of the few garments I've made that is entirely handsewn. I'm surprised by how sturdy it seems when worn. The red glass beads are from the trade faire we were at earlier this year. I thought they were pretty. :) So, that is that. The stays are done. And hopefully tomorrow I will be on to my next corset adventure when the busk for my 1860's corset arrives. I got dozens of zip ties from Harbor Freight yesterday so I'm prepared. Love, Sarah
A bustle pad is an essential undergarment to be worn under your petticoat to create the iconic late Victorian silhouette. material: 100% linen (could be colored) or cotton (only white) Production times - 25-27 days. Thank you for understanding The design for this bustle pad is inspired by an authentic garment. Its function is to support the weight of the petticoat and the skirt, therefore it has more e padding in the center and quilted lines to create a smooth shape. The french knot stitches aren't just a pretty embellishment they also give it structure. It can be worn with dresses from 1890 to 1900.
