Tips and tricks for a novel study or book study on Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. Hatchet Novel study activities to make your next novel study successful
This novel study pack hosts questions and thinking strategies which correlates with the novel "Rules", written by Cynthia Lord. This pack is loaded with section question and written response worksheets, vocabulary, critical thinking strategies, and a few fun activities to help the reader better understand the novel. We read this book in addition to others during our character unit study for responsibility. From the back cover of the book: Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She's spent years trying to teach David the rules from, "a peach is not a funny-looking apple" to "keep your pants on in public" - in order to head off David's embarrassing behaviors. But the summer Catherine meets Jason, a surprising, new sort-of-friend, and Kristi, the potential next-door friend she's always wished for, it's her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal? If you haven't read this book - you certainly should. Ideal for multiple grades and a great tool for helping to identify key character traits.

Hello! My name is Shelly Smith, and I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Elementary Literacy. My students get results that are much higher than our district/state average! I believe much of it is due to the way in which literacy is taught in my classroom. Welcome to my Literacy Studio! I believe you will be extremely pleased with this unique and rigorous approach to literacy that hooks students from the very beginning. This study is a blend of the historical fiction novel, Sophia's War, and historical informational text that relates to the Revolutionary War Era. All of the CCSS 5th grade literacy, several informational, and United States History standards are covered all within one novel! There is nothing like this on the market. This study will change the way you teach literacy. Socratic Seminars are the backbone to this approach along with the interpretive questions. Students use test-based evidence while responding in their Socratic Seminars and in their written responses. I have learned through my years of teaching that my classroom curriculum needs to be rigorous, engaging, and it needs to meet the CCSS. This historical fiction novel study is just that! I originally learned about using interpretive questioning with Socratic Seminars during my time teaching in Tacoma, Washington. It proved very successful in my classroom's proficiency! This unit extends what I did in Tacoma with the district’s basal to how I teach now using novels. Each student has a copy of the novel we are reading. Donorschoose.org is a great resource in obtaining the books you need. One reason I like this whole class approach is that all my students are being exposed to 5th grade reading material, vocabulary, and the 5th grade CCSS. My lower reading students are set up to be successful with 5th grade text because they have heard me read the text before they read it with a partner, a more competent other. In this unit you will find: 1. How to use this resource in your classroom 2. The Socratic Seminar: research base and strategy in practice 3. Teaching vocabulary with novel studies 4. Scripted lesson examples 5. Reading response notebook examples from my classroom 6. Common Core standard alignment 7. 24 Lesson plans 8. 1 Bonus lesson Let the higher order thinking and learning begin! A multiple choice quiz after reading is a quick and easy way to check student comprehension, but it doesn't allow you to assess deeper understanding and it certainly isn't fun or creative.
