Living in one room can have its challenges — especially when you’re not much of a minimalist. When Nor Toma moved into this Stockholm apartment, which measures less than 25 square meters (269 square feet), she had lofty visions of an all-white, uber-minimal space. But then things turned out a little differently. Nor’s last apartment, in Gothenburg, was five times this size, but she was eager to experiment with living small.

Katie Butler is a visual artist living and working out of her home in Toronto, Canada. Katie works mainly with acrylics to create colourful and moody figurative paintings. Her love for painting was reignited in 2019, when she began offering commission portraits surrounding themes of body positivity. Since then, her work has pivoted towards the portrayal of candid moments. Katie uses her art as a means for storytelling — depicting scenes where the subject becomes the character of a larger narrative, often through the expressive nature of the human form. Pictured here in a size medium.

Omar Ortiz was born in 1977 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico where he still lives. Since he was a boy he has been interested in drawing and illustration. He studied for a degree in Graphic Design, where he learned different techniques such as hand drawing, pastels, charcoal, water colors, acrylics and airbrushing. When he finished college he decided to make a living from painting. In 2002 he attended his first oil paint classes with the artist Carmen Alarcón, who he considers his main teacher. Omar Ortiz currently works with oil painting because he considers it the noblest technique. His work is characterized as minimalistic – hyperrealism where the human body is predominate with texture-filled backgrounds and a magical use of fabric. Omar describes his work by saying, “Since I started painting I have always tried to represent things as real as I can. Sometimes I succeed and some others I don´t but it´s a fact that it is very difficult for me to do otherwise. I enjoy the challenge of reproducing skin tones and it´s nuances under natural light, particularly in bright conditions. I like simplicity in my pieces since I believe that excesses make us more poor rather than rich.”

Allow the essence of Camusdarach Beach to surge into your living space with this evocative abstract print, encapsulating the stirring atmosphere of a Scottish coastal tempest. Swathes of tumultuous clouds, rendered with dynamic brushstrokes in a monochromatic palette of greys, whites, and deep blacks, command the upper portion of the scene, conveying the formidable power of the gathering storm. Below this moody sky, glimpses of serene blue waters emerge, a dance of lighter hues that hint at the transient peace between gusts. The tranquil aqua tones seem almost in playful contrast with the looming skies, creating a captivating visual counterpoint that speaks to nature's complex beauty. Grounding the image, the gentle undulations of the sandy dunes, adorned with tufts of windswept grasses and kissed by shadow, invite contemplation of nature's textures. Touches of warm yellows and golds from scattered wildflowers breathe life and movement into the serene foreground, a bright foil to the brooding firmament above. This piece from our 'Scottish Beaches' collection offers a window into a moment of natural drama and contrast, promising to stir the imagination and evoke the wild Scottish coastal spirit in any environment it adorns. Whether it graces a minimalistic modern apartment or complements a rustic, traditional home, this print is a sublime choice for those who wish to bring the essence of Scotland's wild, coastal landscapes indoors.
