It was created in the late 17th century to represent Charles II, who was the king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1660 until his death in 1685. The effigy is made of wax and is dressed in the coronation robes of Charles II, including the crown and scepter. The figure is reclined on a raised platform, with the head resting on a pillow and the feet supported by a footrest. The effigy was created by the French sculptor Grinling Gibbons and was intended to be placed in the king's tomb at Westminster Abbey. However, due to the outbreak of the Great Plague in 1665 and the subsequent Great Fire of London in 1666, the tomb was never completed, and the effigy remained in storage. Today, the effigy of Charles II is on display in the Royal Vault at Windsor Castle, along with other royal effigies and tombs. While the effigy is not open to the public, visitors to Windsor Castle can see it on special tours of the Royal Vault. Featured in a special exhibition high above the Abbey floor, the Galleries in the beautiful 13th century triforium display the greatest treasures and tell the story of Westminster Abbey's thousand-year history.
